one of the most bizarre stats of the season so far tells us they've had as many attempts on goal as the leaders Arsenal.

Didnt realise that we had so many goal attempts but with so little to show for it. so it got me looking at some stats

What is going wrong? Why aren't more of our goal attempts turning into goals? Should we be in last place?

Accuracy is one problem at least. We are 6th in the league on goal attempts, but 15th in shots on target. But no way near last spot.

Only 2% of our shots have been made in the 6 yard box (18th place) compared to Arsenal with 5% and 13th place or Chelsea with 11% and 1st place
57% of our shots are from outside of the box, joint 4th highest in the premier league (with Spurs). we are 14th highest attempts inside the 18 yard box.

So how about shots against per game ? well we conceded 13.7 shots per game on average, putting us in 12th spot. In last spot Fulham have had a massive 20.3 shots per game against them.

We have put in an average of 23 tackles per game, putting us in 4th spot and 8.8 interceptions putting us in 19th (Chelsea have the made the least interceptions per game).

    http://www.whoscored.com/Regions/25...amStatistics/England-Premier-League-2013-2014

None of the stats put us in last place, in fact we should probably be between 12th and 15th in the league.

So what conclusions can be made from this, if any?

oh, 76% of the attempted shots against us came down the middle - worst in the premier league. Only 9% came down the right side (so against Colback) which is the best in the premier league. 13% down the left, putting us in 5th. So our fullbacks look to be worth their wages.

Well Liverpool concede more shots per game than us but Mignolet saves a high percentage of them. Westwood on the other hand is **** and lets a lot of those shots at him go in.

On the pitch I think it's clear our problem is defencive frailties. Conceding first and constantly being opened up chasing the equaliser.

Paolo refused to protect the defence with a DM so explains that statistic

Westie seems to save most initial shots, he just parries straight back into the danger area and gifts teams another goal scoring opportunity, usually with Westwood still on the deck.

Totally agree mate he is very slow at getting back up contrast that to what we used to have. Liverpool were playing someone a few weeks ago mig saved it got back up saved the rebound then got back up again and punched it out for a corner our big stiff plank would have been picking it out of his net.

By simply awarding points based on results is grossly unfair.

If we also factored in a reward based on the level of support, that alone would probably ensure both ourselves and our near neighbours were never relegated!

Our annual problem is our major continuing problem. We don't score enough goals simple as that. We have just 5 goals to show for 6 league games, so couple that now with the double whammy of conceding 14 means we are bottom of the world. We've let in 3 in each of the last 4 games.

Oh and our midfield are pretty cack as well.

    Not pretty is it? Lol

We are definitely clutching at anything that'll float at the minute but it could also imply that with the right guy in charge it might mean that he doesnt have to make too many changes to start making things work.

Just another straw to add to the pile.

Question is how the **** we are not scoring goals when we have one of the highest shots per game ratio in the Premier league

and why are we conceding more goals than fulham, when teams are having 20 shots against them per game

as Bri said, I reckon with a DM starting on the pitch, to protect the central defence, then our goals conceded will decrease. we need to stop the attacks from coming down the middle

Cabral, Ki and Catts could be the answer with AJ and Giacherinni playing behind Altidore in a 4-3-2-1 formation.

Don't think they'll be any doubt that a dm will be played now with Catts back, but It's the perfect opportunity to give the two french speaking lads some protection while they form a partnership at the back but they won't be started together while Bally is in charge mark my words.

JOS is a good defender as long as he is not partnered with another slow defender like Cuellar. He marshalls the defence effectively, but he needs to be partnered with a fast defender (like Diakte or Roberge) as they play to each others strengths. JOS and Cuellar partnership will always get exposed against teams with fast/agile strikers.

To be honest mate I've lost all faith in JoS, three defenders he's played with this season and he's been dreadful.

Diakite and Roberge are our best centre half pairing imo. Id have Catts as captain too and id give Anyone his shot.

It's a 3 point plan (no pun intended btw!)
    1: score more goals
    2: don't concede as many
3: pray for a change of luck
