Basically, yes. Rodgers did say when we got Mignolet that he was there for competition for Reina which would have been good for both of them I think - it also doesn't look like that was the idea anyway. I think we all knew Reina wanted to finish his career at Barcelona, it was just a question of time and while it wouldn't have been right to jump ship and leave us in the lurch should the Barca vacancy suddenly come up [which it didn't] I don't like the way the deal with Napoli was done.
No fair enough Johnson, I think they just thought no point having such a high earner on the bench, we're trying to get away from that So you'd think it went 1 Valdes may go and Barca linked with Reina and agent gets some contact 2 Reina says would like Barca 3 We start looking and Mings available for 9 mill 4 Valdes staying 5 We sign mIng anyway 6 Rafa joins Napoli and wants Reina 7 We agree as we have a better keeper according to BR (and me imo ) and Reina wont play much
I find it odd that so many people seem to expect only the god's honest truth from clubs, managers, players etc in their public pronouncements, and are indignant when it's revealed that they've been telling porkies. Obviously when we signed Mig and still had Pepe the club's stance is that we're keeping them both and they're both important to the squad. What would we expect them to say- "We've signed Mignolet now so we're looking to offload Reina asap"? That's just not going to happen. However, it was obvious from the day we signed Mig that Pepe's days were numbered, so no surprise there. As to how the deal was done- well, as ever, we don't really know what was going on behind the scenes so there's no point in rushing to judge, imo.
Fair enough I'm pretty sure the club gave him time to agree, sign the contract, say his goodbyes, and leave with dignity. If I recall he did stay for about a week when the deal was announced and only after did he post a goodbye to the fans. Take Shelvey, for example. I'm sure BR didn't pick up the phone, tell Swansea to hang on a minute while he called in Shelvey, sat him down, asked his opinion, etc. He probably just accepted the offer. The club gets offers i'm assuming quite often, and accepts them without consulting the player first. Downing is another example. He didn't want to leave and thought his place was safe. We didn't want him anymore so we sold him. Now if a player is transfer listed without a buyer, or wants to leave, I'm sure their needs are taken into consideration. So Reina wasn't that hard done by, not sure why he keeps complaining about it.
Reina is playing for an exciting team in the Champions League, led by one of his favourite managers, and working with his favourite goalkeeping coach. It's not as if he's been completely shafted...
we wanted a new GK, Rafa wanted Reina so we said yeah as he wouldnt be getting a game with us Thats it If Reina had kept his focus (I know you cant all the time but we're talking large chunks of seasons) we wouldnt have needed a new keeper
Reina was going to Barca last time I heard. His form had declined over the past few seasons so it was only right we got a new keeper in. Im very happy with Mignolet
guys the problem is the dishonesty. sorry but rodgers clearly stated he "had dinner" with reina and said he was bringing in competition for him and reina was fine with it. undeniable. whether or not the motivation was competition or replace we fans were "lied to" in my opinion. why cos right after shafting reina rodgers comes out and say s it was all about wages and reain would be on the bench. I do not see anything other than rodgers stating that he was always after a keeper but it changed form "compete" to reina was always going to the bench so we could not afford him. Its pretty clear to me we always expected to sell reina but when barca never occured they shoved the guy out. ruthless yes? problem? not so much. my issue is its lies to the fans and thats not on (IMO) So... again world class keeper leaves, a lot of people try to make out the club can do no wrong and he must be past it, total fantasy IMO. reins = world class, will be world class. Mingolet needs to improve on concentration, bravery, catching and distribution... superb short stopper, fantastic but he is not as good as reina.... yet. LFC have to move on and thats fine but don't try to sell me a pup by saying either reina is past it or that the club didn't pull a fast one.
You and me seem to be the only ones who see it this way! I don't like the way the club went about it, whether or not Reina has said it would be hard to say no to Barcelona. The story changed a couple of times as you pointed out. As a fan I don't want to be kept up to date with who we're looking to bring in or let go - we'll find out soon enough - but if the club must give out interviews, please be truthful. More importantly, maintain integrity with all dealings.
Think a lot of people criticised the way at which it went down at the time,...I'm sure there's threads with all our comments somewhere.... I was not happy how the club did it from what we have been told but I also lessen my sympathy for a player who raises his skirts, however subtlety elsewhere... Think it's now about letting go. I'm not playing the compare game because it's pointless. I could take the best part of Reina's Liverpool career and say Mingnolet can't touch that (at least yet) I could equally point to the last couple if years when talking about "concentration, confidence etc" that wouldn't be fair either. It really comes down to: It's done. Reina didn't get thrown on some keeper scrap heap, he's playing for a CL team with a real chance of playing for one of the top 3 clubs in the world next year. It wasn't exactly Julius Caesar.....the fact he can't shut up about it is starting to make me suspicious.
I haven't read much about this apart from the quotes in the OP. Is he going on about it or is it that we keep revisiting the same interview?
Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina eyes return to Barcelona http://www.express.co.uk/sport/foot...oalkeeper-Pepe-Reina-eyes-return-to-Barcelona
I don't see why he's so upset about not telling him about the move. If Barca went behind Liverpools back to talk to Reina do we really think he would come running to us telling the truth? Coming out and saying I want to join Barca and with Valdez leaving, left us in a situation where we had to act quick. They're are no losers in this situation.
I think they're talking 'principle' My mate told me that Reina is by no means squeaky clean in all of this.
Tell someone who cares Reina, you ungrateful c*nt. He probably is a better keeper than Mignolet, the difference is that at Liverpool Mignolet tries 100% and Reina tries 20-30%, making Mignolet the better keeper for Liverpool.
I have no doubt he's not clean at all. You don't come out and ask Barca to bid for him without something happening behind the scenes. I just think he's been found out and is now crying foul.
