Apparently his wife is from Derby and his kids were born there. Worst thing is that when we play them, assuming he does go, he will now more than most how to set about beating us. Can't say i blame him for wanting a No 1 position.
whatever's happening behind the scenes is working so I hope Steve stays - totally agree about the need for continuity. The longer we can keep the same people round the club, avoiding this ridiculous turnover of players, the better.
McClaren would be mad to take the job. He still remains one of the most reviled managers in English football: his brief stint at Forest showed that. Far better off staying with us and continuing his seemingly excellent influence within the First Team squad.
Just heard it on Talksport headlines too. Shame if it happens - currently enjoying all the "good feeling" emanating from the club and think Steve McC is a positive contributor...
Hi Ian, I mentioned on another post that McLaren is the succession plan for Harry. He would be mad to go. No other team / club will give him the funds & support that Tonz does / will ( in the future )
I could never blame McLaren for taking the Derby job, but I think it'd be a big miss for us this season. He's brilliant on the training pitch, and I think Saturday was the first bit of evidence of the work we've been putting in behind the scenes. I hope Redknapp has a top draw replacement lined up in case McLaren goes.
Just listened to Colin and Alan Brazil interviewing Harry on Talksport. Harry reckons SMcC could be at Derby by the end of the day. Permission to talk - granted.
Just saw this ................... now I'm really peeved. http://www.newsnow.co.uk/A/670717991?-294:802 Former England boss Steve McClaren is set to be confirmed as the new manager of Sky Bet Championship club Derby. It is understood the 52-year-old's appointment will be announced later today. The appointment could prove controversial as McClaren was formerly in charge of rivals Nottingham Forest, before quitting after 122 days. McClaren will replace Nigel Clough, who was sacked on Saturday in the wake of a 1-0 derby defeat at Forest. His arrival at Pride Park will mark the completion of a circle for the man who guided Middlesbrough to Carling Cup glory and FC Twente to the Dutch title. McClaren played for Derby and returned to make his name as a coach with the Rams under Jim Smith before getting his big chance at Manchester United. McClaren, who was in charge of England for 18 months after succeeding Sven-Goran Eriksson in 2006, has been working as first-team coach at QPR since July.
I think that all we can do is thank him for his contribution and wish him well and if things don't work out for him at Derby he is welcome back anytime.
Skybet now have him as 1/12. Pulis next at 10/1. Looks done and dusted to me. I also think that his role as "first team coach" has been overstated. He was brought in on a three month contract to help out. There has been much talk of him spending a lot of time with Hoillett, trying to get his game in order. It suited us to have him help out for a few months whilst he was waiting for the managerial merry-go-round to kick in after a couple of months of the season. Hence the three month contract, not six or twelve. I don't believe he was brought in just in case Harry walked or was kicked out if things didn't go well.
OFFICIAL ON BBC 1722: BREAKING NEWS Derby County name former England manager Steve McClaren as their new head coach on a three-year contract.
Agree David, what needed to be taught, seems to have been taught, I think the video showing the 33 pass sequence proves that. He's got the players moving off the ball, finding space, enabling the pass to be made. It's looking good, we seem have a football team again, and I'm sure the coaches that remain can keep the process going. Onwards and upwards!
No surprise really, good for him - no doubt our terrific start to the season under his coaching tutelage added to his credentials - I wish him well in his new post. Hopefully our remaining coaching staff can apply some of his shared expertise to their techniques. Curious as to the subtle difference between the title of Head Coach versus Manager? I note in the announcement, "McClaren will work alongside a yet-to-be-named technical director."
It was my understanding that this was never meant to be a permanent arrangement. Three months to cover the pre- season, help bed in the new team and if he picked up a new post in the mean time he could go. What is curious that he will be working with a technical director. I would have thought he would want complete control. I also think that if he had waited for a few more weeks when clubs boards start pannicking there may be juicier jobs up for grabs. Anyway Steve, I wish you well but can't help thinking herding cats will be easier.
He has a history with the club and that may have influenced his decision. "Steve is a highly qualified coach with all the skill-sets required to be a success here at Pride Park," Derby chief executive Sam Rush said in a club statement. "It is also important that Steve, Paul and Eric know what it means to play for Derby County and they have been at the club during the good times." please log in to view this image
