We need them to make a decision on Powell. Whatever that is, sack him or back him, it must be done now. I have a ton of respect for the board, they came in when we were drowning and saved the club from administration, they listened (perhaps rashly) to the fans and got in Powell. They have allowed Powell to bring in what now must be close to 60 new faces, (I wonder how that stacks on average to other championship clubs) they backed us up and got us out of that pub league. They even sacked the free lunchers and leeches that have sucked this club dry for years, so I trust their judgment. They have one more decision to make, to sack or back Powell, Quite frankly, I wouldn't lose any sleep if they sacked him. But I think they will back him and give him his dignity and let him see this season out and not renew his contract. That might be a mistake.
I say give him a new Contract and back him... Derby have just sacked their manager and could see Powell as an ideal replacement (what with his links to them albeit he's links to loads of clubs) Regardless if Derby are interested there are going to be many more sackings before the end of the season and if a team come in for Powell (i.e. he may want to take something with security) we'll hardly get any compensation because his Contract is basically up... money which could be used!!
I agree with every single word of this Typical... I do however, have a sneaky suspicion that Powell will be shown the door if our home form shows no improvement. After all, Charlton fans not showing up at The Valley to witness the utter ****e on display = Even worse cash flow.
I cannot stand our owners. As Ted Heath once said of Tiny Rowland, they are the unacceptable face of capitalism. The more you read of Jiminez and the court cases he has pending with ex players he is rumoured to have alleged money disputes with, the more you wonder whether a Fit & Proper Persons test was even done here. Slater is nothing more than a cheesy front man who never comes to our games, and supports Man City. Martin Prothero is invisible. The owners have no affinity, empathy or care for CAFC. They saw it as a vessel to cash in on the big bucks of the Sky TV deal. They lacked the means to get us even close to the Promised Land. Richard Murray should also be feeling very, very embarrassed yet again. Another fine mess he has got us into.
I agree with Typical. It's up to the owners to make a decision, the question is how do they back him? Vote of confidence? Since The Doctor has said that he wants to get the players' contracts sorted before he sorts his own, so they would have to identify which players will be the nucleus of the rebuilding job which seems to be on its way, and get their contracts sorted. It's always seemed to me that the owners are prepared to risk relegation in order to get the club financially stable, and that risk is increasing now, and would still be there under a different manager. Personally I would be disillusioned if they appointed a new manager and suddenly produced the cash which had not previously been there. It's up to the owners to make this decision, not the fans. It would not reflect well on us at all if the fans drove The Doctor out of Charlton.
In your opinion, do you think that any other manager could get more out of this group of players (also accepting that there is no money for additions going forward) ? If the answer is "yes", then surely sentiment has to be pushed aside and a hard decision has to be made ? Going back down to League One would be a disaster. I watched Forest v Derby yesterday on Sky. Billy Davies spent the entire game cajoling his side. At full time he pumped every player as they walked off. I then read the reports from our fans at Burnley that CP sat in the dug out for almost the whole game. His fire seems to have gone out. It is possible to get someone in on a short term, incentivised contract for six months to keep us up. If we leave it until Xmas I fear the damage will have been done. Lets all see how we feel after Tues night.
About as stupid as sacking our manager would be with no obvious successfull replacement on offer and no money to pay him off.A lot of people including me, are finding football these days more and more tiresome in terms of money and spending dominating, but you wonder how long Powell would last at the Valley if the club had a small pot of gold availible to sack him and bring in, for example, Nigel Clough.
The problem we have here Vol, is nobody, including myself really understood what 'a bloody fine mess' Richard Murray got us into. The new board did a great patching job, and now they patches are coming undone. Russian billionaires and Arab sheikhs do not just appear out of the desert....we did well to get what we did. I did not see any other consortiums fighting to take us over. It is really quite irrelevant what teams these guys support, and in fact, history has proven that home grown fans like Mark Hulyer are completely bonkers when running football clubs (although perversely it was the best thing to happen to us) that finally a proper business model came along and ran us properly. I can't see why the board should be asked to do anything different, they have put contracts on the best players, the crap ones can go. The manager has seemed reluctant to agree a new contract, so really the board should make the decision on him and now. It's probably not going to make that much difference if Jimminwz attended each week is it? This board have played a decent game thus far, it's their money, let's see if they have the balls to make a decision on Powell. They were smart enough to see how useless the other dead wood at the club was.
V-a-V: Could we get a manager who would work under the present contract situation? Paul Hart is doing a grand job where he is, thank you, and Dyer and Matthew both have their contracts running down as well, so the cheap option of an internal promotion seems unlikely. There seems to be a huge problem of morale more than anything else, including The Doctor's. It appears to me that he made a huge mistake in deciding not to sort his own contract out before the players', infact he has probably opened the door for his own departure. It may well be too late for him to change his mind, but if he does get the sack I hope he retains a good relationship with the fans. He was a good manager up until this season, and his position isn't easy. Don't forget Curbs was quite undemonstrative during games, it was Day who did the shouting.
He should, but come the next fans meeting he attends, all the memories if him being proud of selling off our many assets, his many mistakes & general poor decisions will all be forgotten, and those that are justifiably wary of this current vacuous board, will apply different rules for him, and totally put aside the fact that this lot are only here thanks to Murray himself...
I have a feeling that if we lose our next two games then Powell will be gone. There was a board meeting on Thursday and I wouldn't be surprised if Powell wasn't talked about. There seems to be a shroud of despair hanging over the Club at the moment. Powell seems to be very down and I don't think that is just because we are losing. I know it shouldn't ,but I really feel that the contract situation with the players, is having a detrimental affect on them. It is reaching a stage of the season where something needs to give. Whether that is bringing in a couple of loan players or getting in a new manager. We have well and truly shuffled the pack player wise and experimented with different formations, none have worked. I think it is time to stick with one and carry on with it. I would like to see us play a 4-4-2 and go at teams from the start. I would rather get hanged for a sheep than a lamb. Team for Tuesday Hamer Wilson, Morrison, Dervite, Evina Stewart, Cousins, Jackson, Harriott, Sordell, Kermorgant ( if fit).
Didn't CP say that he will not discuss his contract until the players have theirs sorted? the best players have had theirs done, so perhaps a decision has been made already.....
Kermit, as CP says, is our talisman, and if he signed a new contract extension that would be a big step in the right direction.
I think a part from the first 4 games of Powell's managerial career with us was much worse than the predicament we find ourselves in now. Yes the squad is much changed now but the squad we had then should still have got better results and Powell managed to see through that and invest in his own players to win the league. That compared to now is much worse in my opinion when you base it on how many teams you feel are better then us in the league and place Charlton in that position we can't be far off it now. I would say the only clubs I feel are worse then us are Birmingham, Barnsley and Yeovil but I do agree we should have more points on the board then we do now.
So the players are disheartened due to their contract situations, eh? I say this is rot. If they fancy moving on to a different club in the summer, then put a shift in for the club and the fans, and we will wave them off fondly. Moping around the pitch does no one any favours, especially the player. Why doesn't CP sign a new contract? Is he being offered £6.18 per hour for his efforts? No, I thought not. If Leicester or Derby came in with a five year contract, he would up sticks and be gone. He would walk away from a poorly motivated and poorly coached group of players - his players - and head for the promised land. All this vitriol against the board is nonsense. They bought our club, they subsidise it from their own pockets, and they continue to work for our benefit, yet so many want to hound them out, thus leaving us in a ****tier position than when they first came in. I say support the board, and support whatever decision they make regarding Powell's on-going tenure.
It was Kevin Cash who was the real money man. He fell out with Jiminez last year, and withdrew his financial backing. We also know that Jiminez fell out with Dennis Wise (court case), Gus Poyet (rumoured court case), and Chris Powell. Are you spotting a trend here ? It always amazes me how Richard Murray escapes scrutiny and a hell of a lot of criticism here. We all know that he had a coterie of supporters round him who kissed his backside for years, but the sheer number and consequences of the many bad decisions he has made almost beggars belief. I know that he has pumped loads of the dough into the club but his motives are not entirely altruistic...he wants it back. If CL this week is to be believed, RM is single handedly paying the wage bill now out of his personal bank account...but really...how many more mistakes is this guy going to make. He will have Dowie back next
Good to hear from you dick. it feels like we are shuffling the deck chairs on the Titanic. Every week we all scratch our heads for a new formation or tactic...the trouble is, they all involve the same cack players
Thank you, I thought it was about time I imparted my knowledge on all things Charlton. Typical was running out of people to argue with.
