Friend feels QPR are there for the taking . 6:00am Saturday 28th September 2013 QUEENS PARK RANGERS may be the bookiesâ favourites to be promoted to the Premier League, but a Middlesbrough victory at the league pacesetters today would not register as a massive shock, believes defender George Friend. QPR have accustomed to life in the Championship well with 20 points from their first eight matches, unbeaten so far since relegation from the top flight last season. But in Middlesbrough, Friend believes Rangers will meet their match at Loftus Road today - so long as Boro eradicate the defensive errors that have blighted some otherwise-encouraging performances this term. Boro recovered from going 2-0 down at home to Bournemouth last weekend and led 3-2 until Jonathan Woodgate scored an 83rd minute own goal, days after the Teessiders threw away a 2-0 lead at Nottingham Forest. Tony Mowbrayâs team sit 16th in the Championship having drawn five games - the most in the league - while QPR have dropped just four points so far this season. But Friend is confident that Boro can pick up a result in the capital. âTheyâre going well. Theyâre beating teams 1-0 with professional performances,â admitted Friend. âTheyâve got some skilful players and some Premier League quality chucked in there too. âItâs not going to be easy, itâs a small compact stadium with a good atmosphere but we fancy our chances. âAnywhere in this league, weâve got to, really. Itâs not as if itâs Manchester United away, itâs QPR, so weâve got to get the points. âWhile theyâre still finding their feet as a squad, and there has been a lot going on at that club over the last couple of years, it canât be easy to be a player down there. âHarry Redknappâs a good manager and heâll have them well-drilled, hopefully we can catch them unawares.â Despite being seldom under pressure against Bournemouth, Boro conspired to concede three times, and Mowbray has made defending a top priority in training this week. âYouâre always going to make mistakes as a defender,â said Friend, who will see Ben Gibson replace the suspended Rhys Williams at centre-half this afternoon. âThe best ones donât make the same mistakes and eradicate them. âThatâs what the manager was getting at. If the same people keep making mistakes itâs going to have to change but weâve got a lot of good defenders here, with experience of winning, and weâve got players at the other end of the scale with Gibbo, heâs young but heâs a talent. âYou hope as a defender youâre not going to make mistakes that cost goals and cost games and there have been a few times this season that a game has ended up being a draw when perhaps we could have gone on to win it. âGoing 2-0 down so quickly last week, we showed real desire to come back, so when we took the lead only to concede again it felt like a loss. Itâs a bit of a shame. We just hope to eradicate the mistakes and put them behind us.â QPR, who, under Redknapp have a squad the envy of the rest of the division, will be a different prospect to Bournemouth, promoted from League One last season, and left-back Friend is expecting a busy shift at Loftus Road. âWe looked at the running stats for Bournemouth and it wasnât quite as high as other games, but Iâm sure QPR will attack down the flanks and cause us problems, itâll be different to Bournemouth,â said Friend who, with two goals to his name this season is Boroâs joint top-scorer. âWe donât know the team theyâll put out, likewise they wonât know ours so weâll go down to get the points. âItâs no surprise Iâm top scorer, Iâm sure everyone else understands,â he joked. âObviously Iâm enjoying it, everyone else is chipping in, Keiâs [Kamara] come in and scored twice, Juke got off to a good start, hopefully theyâll keep on firing and keep on going. If I pop up with a few more then itâs a plus, but ultimately Iâm a defender and I need to be preventing goals.â Eight points from eight games is a solid enough start for a team that started well last season only to collapse in the second half of the campaign, and Friend feels that the team spirit on Teesside will stand them in good stead this year. âWe had a pretty good team spirit last year but it is even better this year,â Friend said. âAll the lads are really close, everyone meets up outside of training, just to get together. âIt helps that Rhys has been a really good captain. When I first joined he brought me in straight away, I got to know him and his family. It helps to be settled. âHopefully the new boys feel settled, weâve gelled really quickly. There are some big characters in Albert [Adomah] and Kei that have come in and I think thatâs helped the atmosphere in the dressing room. âWhen we were 2-0 down we needed those characters to come together. If weâre getting on well on the training ground it makes it easier to gel on a Saturday.â
It’s not as if it’s Manchester United away, it’s QPR, so we’ve got to get the points. ****er
That's as far as I got, came straight down to quick reply, but was just going to add an extra 4 letters.
Not sure why it's "breathtaking"... Some did the same thing on here in respect of Swindon and Yeovil.
Harry should pin that up on the wall before the game! ****er!! Hope we stuff those words down his throat.
Am I missing something? Are we Manchester United? Thin skinned bunch aren't we? We are a club with a grand total of 11 wins in the league over the last 2 seasons. A little way to go before we can get cocky I think.
To be honest, that's the kind of attitude I would want from him if I was a borough fan. Good on him, and may the best team win.
I just think that you should talk up your own game, believe in your own abilities and not cuss the opponents. It'll only come back to haunt you. The difference about someone on here saying something is different to a professional. Just a lack of respect. I would say the same about us cussing any other team, and albeit for a penalty last week Yeovil would have got something from that game. They have got here with merit and should be treated with respect for their achievement.
You're right of course, we're not Man United, at least not last time I looked. I'm not personally particularly bothered by the comments either, but I think what irks people though is not that simple statement of fact, but the assumption behind it that simply because we are not one of the biggest names in football means that hey should expect to beat us. The fact that we're unbeaten and are 3 points clear at the top of the league seems somehow to be less relevant than the fact that we're not a big name. Different situation between us and Yeovil in that they're newly and struggling, quite reasonable for us to expect to get a result against them IMHO. Having said all that, it's probably not worth getting too worked up about.
