When the rebuild of the place below the clock was going on I posted, on another website, can we have our clock back whilst they are renovating. Thanks once again Lambrettaman, a brilliant picture and yes I remember it well and I wished it could have been replicated and put back.
Certainly do and if I'm not mistaken that's my dad's old Ford Anglia going past........... happy days
My grandfather's Poultry shop used to be there. I have a picture somewhere of it with the whole of that frontage covered in unplucked pheasants, turkeys and ducks. It would have been quite a while before then, probably in the twenties. I'll have to see if I can dig the picture out.
What year is that. Looks like the 60's. Used to take someone out who worked in a Travel Agents under the Clock-it was 1966 (and all that). The picture shows another shop there where the travel agents was. And the taxi was my Ford Anglia! What wrecks they were, bought an 8 month old one at the end of 65 (450 pounds had been saving up for 3 years) and the thing dropped to bits around me. Must have replaced every part on it. Got to admit though the 105E engine was solid. Drove the thing to many away grounds including the famous night against Shefield United ah what memories.
I don't remember the old style clock but I remember the really-techno-advance-for-the-time digital clock from the late sixties. Obviously ridiculously old-tech now but at the time it was something.
Aye. Used to buy roasted chestnuts from a seller whose pitch was roughly where the picture is taken from. Stood there meself to see the queen in 1969 when she came to open the new dock. Early 80s a mate of mine was run over there. Went straight over the bonnet of the car, landed on the road, got up, brushed himself down and ran into the station, leaving the car driver in god knows what state of shock.
Brings back lovely memories OLM,thanks mate. Do you remember,I think it was next door up some stairs a barbers shop ( Meeks I think) my Dad took me there for short back and sides.
Just to the left of where the image cuts off are the pubs The Talbot and the Sandringham. My grandparents were the mine hosts between 1973 and 83 (before that the Cross Keys on Beverley Road). I think I do remember the clock from the 1960s. Agree with others else though, I'd love to see it back there!
Me too - never quite fathomed why they took it down over the single storey buildings. It was quite a focal piece. Its taken all this time to put up a decent building in its place.
