Just posted this on another thread and it's a thought I heard mentioned last night by someone I know well.

What would be the thoughts of fans here about a Peter Reid/Kevin Ball combination. Reidy would galvanize fans and players for the next 2 years and Bally can be groomed for the longer term. I always felt that Ballys time would come here but he needs more 1st team experience and him and Reid were very thick together here as manager/club captain the last time. Would fans be happy to see a familiar face from the most successful manager in my lifetime?

We need to get this club united quickly and this, IMO has legs to it?

Any thoughts? Without abuse I hasten to add.

Would Reid come back, would Bally take a 1st team post he seems to be happy managing the under 21's and stepping up as caretaker if needed.
I'm torn both ways with this on one hand IMO Reid is one of the most under rated managers and Bally could become a great manager knows our club inside out and obviously has a love affair with it which leaf me on to why he shouldn't take the job. Which is he has this love affair with the club and we all love him, and I hate to see it all go tits up and him walking away from the club with a bad taste left in his and the fans mouths.

It doesn't fit in with the de fanti model though

Not for me either. Reid is too long out of it

Replied on the other thread but as it's a debate will pop it on here as well.

    Concerns with Reidy:

He's surely been passed by, by the modern game.

I can't imagine, after watching premier passions that our current bunch of lads would stand for his brand of man management.

His last premier league job was as assistant to Pullis at Stoke which in my eyes makes him about as appealing as goebells or goehring.

On the plus side his transfers, flo, nunes and co are probably on a par with some of the **** the italians, MoN and Bruce brought in.

Not saying I want it just chucking in a new angle.

I agree our new structure would be a total maze for Reidy which is why I also don't think Pulis, McCleish or any of the other native names from these shores will also not be coming IMO.

It will have to be a manager happy to work within the framework established and di Matteo/ Zola etc are more suited.

My gut feeling is Zola has moved up the pecking order if RDM is unsure now. We don't need a half hearted appointment. I'm fact we need that like a hole in the head.

As for Bally... If he fancied stepping up as an assistant ir 1st team coach I'd be very happy about that.

I've been firmly in the anti - McClaren camp , but Shteve Mac with Bally as assistant wouldn't disappoint me too much.

Not saying it's a bad idea, just don't think it will happen. Reidy is more a hands on old school type manager and wouldn't fit in with the DOF type of management we have now, Bally? reckon he needs time as a number 2 before he makes the step up to manager.

It'll be a European for sure.

Thing with McLaren is really interesting. He got Boro to Wembley and won them their first trophy and then took them to a European cup final. He won 2 titles in Holland and had a tough time in Germany but with some strange politics going on out of his control.

His club record is actually very, very good but that Wally with the Brolly tag and strange accented interview has tainted his name. He has a far better pedigree than say a Redknapp but has none of the cheeky chappie personality so is generally disliked. He doesn't fill me with much excitement but there is a part of me that says why not? Take him on his record alone and not his personas, and he really should be top of the current pile.

Fans will be totally split apart though if it was him and that's not what we require right now.

No from me. Reids style of football was stale and outdated when he was with us. If not for the Niall Quinn and Super Kev his system would never have worked, and it proved so when the partnership separated and Reid was clean out of ideas.

If Reid and Ball partnered up I'd be sat scratching my head trying to work out who is the master and who is the student. Oh and we'd be nailed on for relegation.

No from me. Leave Reidy in the past so I can remember the good times.
I've already forgotten his last two seasons and that fella Flo he brought in.

Who ever our manager it would be nice for Bally to step up to the number 2, but it's down to the new manager. The fact he survives all these back room clearouts shows he's talented.

Absolutely. He's part of the furniture now. I want him at the club in some capacity for the rest of his coaching career.

I think we need to pull out all the stops and go for Mancini with Bally as his number 2.

ES could offer him a few mill to keep us up money talks

For me I think McClaren with Kev as his number 2.

A partnership with Kev getting more first team experience for a prolonged time and not just when taking over between managers.

Or maybe Moyes if he gets the boot soon.

bringing back Reid would be a mistake, much like when keegan went back to those up the road. It'd all end in tears again.

Leave him in the past like others said. Thank him for what he did for us and move on.

I don't think Moyes would be sacked by the board unless we're floating around mid-table with no sign of progress after 15-20 games. As long as we're in touching distance of the top 4 I think he'll be safe at United and I also believe his only season objective is to finish in the top 4.

Maclaren has credentials to back him up, but it's just an unflattering appointment, most people will probably be appalled if he took over their club but he could turn out to be decent. I don't reckon Peter Reid will be offered another job in top flight football any time soon, he's not what he used to be and hopefully you're fortunate enough that you don't have an owner that will consider sentiment.
