I can see why RDM is favourite, given he's been in the Prem. But I don't see him as experienced enough for the manager. Always thought they got it wrong in sacking O'Neill, to be honest.

Still, I'm weirdly jealous. What I wouldn't give to be discussing a Toon sacking right now.....

Actually, I was thinking about us - isn't Joe Kinnear in charge of hiring and firing now? Wonder if that makes it more or less likely that Pardew will be sacked?

Rene Muelensteen intreuges me but he's not even in the betting. RDM for me out of the names touted. It's looking like an impossible job for any manager so that could limit our options to an ego or an idiot. :p

I don't think you can second guess what Short will do, he's already gone for experience before and it didn't work out, but can't see them going for an untried novice again. Once bitten twice shy.

I have a feeling that he will go for McClaren or RDM, both failures on the managers merry go round.

It's just a shame that Di Canio couldn't continue his good work.

It's a sad day for me...

PDC was the man to finish what Steve Bruce started.

Sunderland were nailed-on relegation favourites under his regime but now there is a chance they will recover... <wah>

Worst thing being that they will get a decent manager like Poyet or even the Champions League winning Roberto Di Matteo! <yikes>

    Sad days...

I think Pulis would be the best option for Sunderland, whilst I'm sure there'd be huge disappointment at the appointment, the bloke has never been relegated. Although it's early days in the season I'm sure an experienced manager is be what Short will be considering, it may not be pretty but they need organising and start to pick up points quickly.

My apologies, that was uncalled for.

But being serious, I wouldn't be surprised if they considered someone like Zola.
I'm only saying it based on the Italian connection.

I can't understand why they'd sack the bloke for rowing with the players, in my experience rowing is fantastic for team building. I can only presume a lot of them had bonded to such an extent with the fans that they too developed an allergy to water and were indeed fearful of failing out the boat.

Just hugely entertaining and hilarious. Loving their troubles. 5 games in, another one bites the dust. The only shame is they didn't give it longer so the club fully imploded.

Simple answer yes, wouldn't be surprised if Pardew or Ashley got confused.

One thing I cant get my head round is how some of the fans are saying he was dealt a bad hand with the fixtures - hard games and it being unfair.

So they got Fulham, Palace, Southampton and West Brom in the first five games and couldn't win one of them.
Were they not more than happy when the fixtures came out - short memories.

A hard start is what Villa got, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, then us.

I see on Betfair there's a few quid left at 10s on MacLaren. I think that despite the poor England showing he's much underrated and he'll be the appointment to fear if they do go for him.

At the moment Sunderland on Betfair (http://www.betfair.com/exchange/football/market?id=1.109449485) are second favourites for the drop and a wise appointment by the Black Cats may make that price move out.

One team which has come in a little in price is West Ham. I've been trading them around the 12-14 mark (lay at 12s back at 14s) and now they're almost matching Newcastle's price for relegation.

One price that does look interesting there is that one can lay Norwich to go down at 3.9. I can see that price moving out slightly over the next week or so, so I may kick off with laying them at this price for a ton or so.

Just a few thoughts on the markets.
