The problem is that it was probably the 2 good cup runs that made us have the worst second half to the season i can remember!
We just didn't have the squad to compete in 3 competitions (probably still don't), so in a way it was Kenny's lust for silverware(and poor signings!!) that got him fired, quite ironic really, but pretty sure that's what hes trying to allude to.

In the end of the day KK bought AC and SD for 55m and thats a sacking offence in anybody's book, (ok, not all his fault and he did buy Suarez) but he has always been and will always be a winner for LFC. I wouldn't of minded him staying, but there was always a niggling doubt that he'd been out of the game to long and I think his English signings just proved that to FSG.

Kenny is old school where trophies and titles are the crux of all football. It's still important these days but the game is now money driven and unfortunately, a top 4 place is worth just as much if not more than FA cup or league cup.

4th is worth 30mil... a league cup is worth a small prize and 7mil in europa.... in short 4th is what arsenal want to win every year

    MFG's going to love this.:)

Kenny will always be a legend for LFC and his last stint as manager won't alter that, imo. However, it did show that his old school philosophy will struggle in the modern era.
His quotes are probably lifted out of context to make the story so I wouldn't read too much into them either.
How many points would I sacrifice to win the trips to Wembley? Well, none personally.
Why does it have to be one or the other?- I want my team to compete in all the competitions. However the league is still the most important to me and the CC was a consolation, not an alternative.
Also, 4th should not be looked upon as an end in itself, more that by being up there you are in a position to compete at the top and in the mix for the title itself.
Wigan won the CC last season and got relegated in the process, only the most unambitious of their supporters would look on that as a successful season.

Not to me it isn't I wouldn't swap even the Carling Cup for 4th, the day I start looking at the money in football I'll stop watching it.

    This.

My first real memory of Liverpool football club was the 90-91 season. I remember my gooner neighbour rubbing it in to my face (I was nearly 7 at the time) as Arsenal won the league. I don't remember being that big a fan - I watched football at my granddads, my dad was a Liverpool fan and I had Liverpool kits but that disappointment and the ribbing spurred me on to continue watching football. It was then the 91-92 season and while I still didn't follow football as religiously as I do now, my interest was almost certainly sparked by Liverpool's FA Cup Run. I remember almost being in tears as we were nearly knocked out in the 5th round to Ipswich and then there was the drama of beating Portsmouth on pens before comfortably beating Sunderland in the final - That FA Cup win made football more than a sport to me

A random game when Liverpool secures 4th place would never have that effect on me - or my children imo

That's too simplistic for me, though. It's not about 4th place as such (and it's certainly not about the money), it's about the relative position in the league being the only valid indicator of the team's current stature.
4th in the table without a cup, shows an unquestionably better standard throughout the season than 8th with a minor cup as far as I'm concerned.

    Couldn't have put it better.

There's a lot of revisionism in the forgoing comments. Put Kenny's reign into context. The club had just escaped financial meltdown, the new owners had no experience of running a football club - let alone one of our standing and complexity and the team itself was in a very poor state and psychologically battered. So before you bleat about how much Kenny spent look at how much time he had to put his plans together.

Yes money may have been better spent but he was one of the major factors in restoring pride and hope to both the club and the fans. For that a;lone we all owe him a great debt of gratitude. Now this may sound a bit like MFG, I really don't care! We are where we are today - on the brink of something really good and PART of that is down to what Kenny achieved.

So you can ram your 4th place and CL money up your backsides. To me LFC have gained their world wide reputation from seeking GLORY not from seeking cash reserves!

That's how I look at it as well, both would be nice but you'll never beat winning a trophy.

Got to say with the money spent, we should have done much better than 8th! Should have built the squad to handle that season as we didn't even have European football in the way!

Still glad we won the CC and that we got to the final of FA but the league should have been better. That arsenal game and those RVP goals sunk us ( along with not getting someone in when Lucas went down!)
