It seems that we've been playing a lot of negative football , and look content to sit n defend a one goal lead in every game we've had so far(let's not count the cup game please).

My question is this, HOW FAR AWAY is a game where we will win, and win comfortably?

We were perilously close to losing it and as per the standard script for us, concede the equaliser to Villa and go on to park the bus to defend the point from the draw. However we managed to score a 2nd goal after that, and I'm very happy that we did so.

But it led me to think, when will we finally get to see a game where after scoring a goal, there is no demotivational half-time team talk or parking of the bus after we get a lead, and that gives us a two-goal cushion win?

Hope it's not this Saturday, was looking forward to this game, until last week, Ben Arfa's looking a right handful. Remember our last time there when we won 2-1 and Guthrie got sent off, and you got relegated. Geordie fans we spoke to leaving the ground were magnanimous in defeat, more upset with Ashley.

Anyway best of luck for the season, I'm hoping for a point on Saturday, as long as we keep in front of the Mackems.

"concede the equaliser to Villa and go on to park the bus to defend the point from the draw."

Villa were obviously on top after scoring, it makes sense that we would have to defend. Also, they were only level for 5 minutes, hardly parking the bus.

I don't see how there was a "demotivational" team talk either. Half time came at a bad time for us as we were on top. They were the home side and losing, if they didn't come out after the break fired up I'd be worried. We were always going to have to try and weather some kind of storm, we didn't quite manage it but got back on top straight away, after that it was comfortable.

We had a great result against a team most of us were expecting to lose against. We even played positive attacking football for a change and pressed their team very well. I don't understand the negativity.

To directly answer your question, I would think it will be at home rather than away, so hopefully against Hull as we have Liverpool and Chelsea after that.

Let's try not to base everything on this impressive victory against Villa. We have played poorly for a very very long time until yesterday, and perhaps even the 1-0 Ben Arfa winner game a few weeks earlier. There's no denying that.

Not really sure why you seem to claim I'm being very negative when in fact I'm really asking when do you guys think we'll get to see a comfortable victory for once, instead of us winning with slim, dangerous 1 goal leads.

As for the demotivational team talk......not sure if you've been following, but it's a theme of our games past where we get a 1 goal lead and proceed to defend the entire game. This is just a cliche we use when that happens.

I would say a lot of it comes down to confidence. You are right that we've been playing poorly for a good few months and not getting results. This will affect the players when we are ahead in games, it is very natural to try and protect a lead when you haven't been doing well and the consequence is that the team sits back. This rarely ends up being a good idea but it's a natural response.

I think as our confidence grows, which it currently is doing, we will be more attacking once we take a lead and we'll hopefully put 2 or 3 past someone. Looking at our next home game, that would seem a good opportunity...but this is Newcastle!

and yes, I have been following :)

    Hope so.

But we're talking about football here. Never does everything go according to plan

I think we'll probably scrape a two goal win in a cup, but the league is too tight and we're the only club who've stood still in the transfer window. I'd happily take 1 goal wins though!

I feel there might be a lot of sitting back this season. Which isn't all bad in my opinion as I believe, with the players we have got, counter attacking football might be a good strategy for us.

When will we win a game by more than 1 goal? Probably when Cisse starts scoring.

I'd be more than happy to go through the season winning all of our games 1-0.

Baldy might feel bad about not winning 3-1, but beggars can't be choosers.

As once pointed out by Keegan it doesn't matter whether you win by 1 goal or 6, it's still only 3 points and that is all that matters, as to not playing well Man Utd did that last season and had ugly wins, the point is they won and look where they ended up at the end of the season.

Three points in the bag is what it's all about.

I can see at our current state (relegation threatened previous season , on the verge of a crisis and all) that most of us would gladly take 1-0 wins. So too would I to be honest, but the question is still up there in the air by me.... It really isn't about whether we win or not, as you all know very well, 1 goal leads are very slim leads that could disappear very quickly. I'm sure we recall games last season where we scored an early goal, only to defend for the next 70 minutes and then concede at the death. And I really did not like that at all, as I'm sure most of us here feel the same.

My point is, in games where we manage to get a lead, what are the chances that we can see us scoring more than one goal, and eventually win comfortably by more than one goal? Instead of having to hold onto the edge of our seats every single game praying the defence holds...

For me personally, I think only in home games against the lesser clubs is there a chance for this to happen. And precisely my point, is that I HOPE it happens, otherwise we'll see that familiar script of watching a nail-biting last few minutes unfold again, hoping that the defence can stop the opponents from scoring.

    What will be, will be.

No good worrying about things that are out of our hands.

Think pardew would get a nosebleed if we went for another goal while one up.

It wouldn't bother me if we won all our games by the odd goal!

Once injuries and suspensions start biting into our squad, we'll be grateful for any points going.

It could be worse though... you could be a Mackem! <laugh>
