Newcastle are considering a January swoop for Norwich midfielder Anthony Pilkington, according to reports from the Sunday People.

The Magpies endured a woeful summer in the transfer market, failing to spend a penny and securing the arrival of just one player – Loic Remy on loan from QPR.

As a result, Alan Pardew and Director of Football Joe Kinnear are planning to up their efforts this winter to ease growing discontent among supporters of the ‘Toon’.

Pilkington is one man to have caught their eye, and reports suggest that Newcastle scouts will assess him over the course of the coming months.

Pardew is believed to have been impressed by the Canaries wide man, and sees him as the ideal candidate to put pressure on Jonas Gutierrez for a starting berth.

Pilkington has shown his ability in the top tier since helping the Carrow Road-based team secure promotion to the Premier League.

The ex-Manchester United youth man has weighed in with a number of assists and goals to become one of Chris Hughton’s key men.

However, the arrivals of new players has put his starting berth under threat, which may tempt the 25-year-old to pursue a move.

Newcastle fans, would Anthony Pilkington ease your transfer concerns?

See how he performs between now and January. If he's not good enough to get into the Norwich team, he's hardly the kind of player we want.

I do not see Jonas as a regular starter this season, could be useful in away games where extra defenders are required. This means Pilkington would have to shift Hatem or Loic and that would be highly unlikely, therefore no thanks.

Our primary goals should be to sign remy permanently and extend Ben arfa's contract. Hopefully these two can stay fit and out of prison and help us to a great first half of the year.

If JFK went for Karl Pilkington, as soon as he opened his mouth to talk about a deal... Karl would be forced to react.....

Not sure how to take that. Maybe trying to put us off because you don't want to lose him?

If we can get him in January, I would sign the lad.

He seems to have been of those players that took a while to get the chance at the top level, but, has grasped his opportunity and done well at Norwich in his two years there.

Ideal player to improve the squad, English born and now a Rep of Ireland international.

People were crying out for someone like Sinclair in the summer, Pilkington is more down to earth and a better player than him with more consistency.

In January he will have 6 months left on his contract with an option of a further 12 months so may be available at the right price.

    Go sign him JFK.

    Pilkington > Obertan. Simple as

Seriously, I'd take him. He'd provide excellent squad depth in our current 4 formation

I was thinking that same thing. And that right back Simpson who QPR picked up for free, he would do as well...

Aye massively so. In particular some of the criticism of Simmo was way over the top, when you consider some of the dross playing fb in the PL now

We've mentioned in recent threads that we should be getting behind the players and giving them a boost instead of getting on their backs and breaking their confidence, but unfortunately it didn't happen for Perchy and Simmo.

Sorry Mr heed. You really wouldn't want him. Can't see him really offering anything extra for you.
As AB pointed out, he is struggling to get in our first team at the moment, so definitely wouldn't be of any use to you boys.
