Michael Owen in the echo said: "I'll always be a ... .. ....." I'm sure you can come up with better answers than the real quote from Mr. Owen.
"I'll always be a badger lover" Or "I'll always be remembered as a complete **** from the club I played my best football for" EDIT: Gerrez
Never mind, I'm ****ing off home tomorrow so you can have your ****ty weather all to yourself :badger:
The guy who won us an FA cup single-handedly and carried the team practically on his own during the Houllier years? I don't dislike Michael, having met him.
Winning the FA Cup I'll give you, he was superb that day. But did he **** carry us under GH! He scored some good and crucial goals but he was around at the right time. Houllier's system was defensive counter-attacking football and required two fast attackers; hence Fowler getting dropped for Heskey. Michael and Robbie showed they could play together and Jari was a superstar when he joined too, but Gerard wanted a very fast lad that knew where the goal was which just happened to be Owen's only two attributes! The defensive structure and the emergence of a young Steven Gerrard carried the team, Owen got the plaudits!
Right, so I'm the only one with a decent word to say about him. Funny how MacManaman seem to get an easy ride - and he DID shaft us - yet Owen, even before he went to United, is treated like an escaped leper. And don't forget, on two occasions, when he left Madrid and Newcastle, he wanted to come back to us as his first choice but WE rejected him (Rafa, rightly). Let it go now. We still got the best out of him and he didn't piss/snort his best years away like another striker mentioned in this thread who was twice as naturally talented but was an obnoxious **** in real life (the support he and Macca showed for the dockers notwithstanding). Good luck to you Michael. Without the dodgy hamstrings that were overused in your teens, and that injury against Sweden too, you'd have broken Charlton's international record. And before anyone says it, I know Fowler was blighted with injuries too (all the more reason to manage his body to best advantage and be disciplined like Michael did).
Can I just put it on record the only thing I called him was a carbon-based lifeform. I don't really dislike him for moving to Madrid at all. At the time I was pretty angry with him for moving to United, but looking back he probably saw it as his final chance to play on the big stage again, obviously it wasn't meant to be. ...however I really cannot stand his punditry. His comments are so utterly tedious and it just seems like his passion for the game disappeared a long time ago. He doesn't seem to offer any significant tactical insight, nor does he seem to offer any insight into the game at all (apart from ripping Enrique to shreds bizzarely everytime he commentates on one of our games - I always find it distinctly unprofessional and irritating). I don't doubt he's a 'nice' guy. I just find him a bit annoying.
