I have to say I'm more than happy with our pricing and that's at least one thing MA has got right. It costs me about £460 for me AND the bairn for two seats at the bottom of L7 in the Milburn. That price is fixed for the next 7 years so in another few years I reckon the gap with other clubs will widen. Credit where it's due.

The Price of Football: Newcastle United lead the league
    12 Sep 2013 12:30

Newcastle United have found themselves top of league - by offering the cheapest Premier League day out and match ticket according to BBC Sport's Price of Football study

Each year the BBC does a "Price of Football" study where they look at ticket prices and overall costs for fans travelling to matches.

This year the stats reveal that average ticket prices across English football's top four divisions have fallen by up to 2.4 per cent.

It showed prices in four main categories have reduced for 2013-14 and also includes the prices of 166 clubs in the top 10 divisions.

According to the study the average cost of the cheapest season ticket at Premier League clubs has risen by more than four per cent, with prices ranging from £299 to £985.

What does this mean for Newcastle United? Well, the study shows that the cheapest Premier League day out (cheapest ticket plus cup of tea, pie and programme) is a trip to watch the Magpies at St James' Park, at £23.20.

Cardiff City, Norwich City and Manchester City all offer a ticket, a programme, a pie and a cup of tea for less than £30.

NUFC however offer the cheapest match-day ticket at £15, with the other three clubs selling one for £20.

The survey also found that the average price of the most affordable adult season ticket in the top fight has gone from £467.95 to £489.11 in the last year, with seven clubs raising their prices this season.

Fans across Britain will tell you that travelling to watch a games at St James gives you one of the - if not the - best atmospheres in the country and news that tickets are cheaper here than anywhere will please and annoy Newcastle fans in equal measures.

The fact that people can watch NUFC play for cheap is great news for all football fans, but what will annoy the Toon Army is that while the tickets may be cheap, there has been no further investment in the team this summer in terms of bringing in players - which is what the fans want to see.

Newcastle United's finances are some of the healthiest in the league and in an era where clubs are finding themselves increasingly in the red and black, it is a promising position to be in.

However the lack of transfers, compounded by the news that owner Mike Ashley's Sports Direct company has joined the top tier of British companies by being promoted in to the FTSE 100, will annoy fans that want to seeing money spent to bring in big names to the club.

Saw the results of the survey earlier - shocking to see that Arsenal's cheapest season ticket is £985.00 which is £220.00 more expensive than next cheapest, which is Spurs at £765.00.

For comparison our most expensive season ticket is £722.00

But you arguably get £200 more worth of entertainment at arsenal over a season...

Would you rather pay £985.00 to watch Arsenal or £722 to watch us?

I can't believe Arsenal can charge so much. Interestingly, I'm reading "I am the secret footballer", which is a decent read (if nowhere near as revelatory as you'd imagine), and he pretty much confirms the sky money means clubs DON'T NEED MATCHDAY GOING FANS or their money to keep running (well, in theory, because I doubt sky would want to broadcast premier league games with nobody inside any of the stadia). At all. Even with FFP and £40 tickets per seat, the use is minimal for top clubs, because they wipe away sums like that in a blink of an eye on their personal envelope usage, never-mind a player's wages.

In that light, some of those prices are simply unnecessary profiteering and discriminatory against poorer people. It's all relative of course, and if 60,000 rich people really want to gather to moan at a frenchman not buying players or winning anything, Arsenal can charge whatever they want.
