Thunder thumbs. That's impressive. I bet you've a couple of right good 'uns saved to trump the lot of us.
Yes he was very down to earth and so human unlike many are. We got talking about the late great Phil Lynott and how good a bass player he was.
Bruce Grobbelaar at a theatre bar in Liverpool on a school trip! A while ago... Got a kiss of the lead singer of the Primatives after a gig at Hull Uni. Peter Scmeichel at an airport- other side of the glass partition! Ryan Giggs when my work mate who comes from Salford and knows his family took me to his local (any other week and we'd have ended up back at his house but he decided to have an early one). Gutted. His Mum is nice. Bobby G and Mani off of Primal Scream at Edinburgh airport recently. Had a bit of a chinwag with them. Willie Thorne having a pizza next to me in a local restaurant where I live in Nottingham. Ed Clancy at the recent Nottingham Milk race - in the rider's HQ. And a couple of years back I kept bumping into Nicky Barmby at matches where I'd bagged director's box action - Sheff Utd (through a Blades sponsor!, I sat in front of Duffers and his entourage who clearly wondered who the heck I was on the Hull side!) - Everton where we saw all sorts of people and I sat next to Tony Cottee - and the Hull restaurant next to the Director's lounge. Quite nice as we were at school together and he had no idea how I kept getting next to him on the way out to the seats! I'll shut up now.
Forgot a few from a stint in the North West. Steve Smith - Olympic High Jumper Robbie Fowler - When he was good. Michael Owen at a golf driving range somewhere near Chester. When he was decent and still at Liverpool. All I could say was 'Alright' - As if he wouldn't be as he stepped into his outrageous high performance sports car.
David Moyes when he was still at Everton at Schipol airport. I'd just checked in and he was stood right behind me. Could have sworn I felt my buttocks being rubbed, or maybe that was my wife. Or my imagination (running away with me). I can't remember what time itwas whn I bumped ino him.
I met Robbie Fowler too - did a tour of Anfield in the days my brother was a student there. We were in the trophy room when Robbie casually ambled through, smiling at the fact we were all gobsmacked. Oh, and when I did the tour of the Nou Camp Patrick Kluivert was on the pitch showing his mates round. No one else seemed to twig, but the guide smiled when I started to mouth the words "is that...?". I got a nice photo with him in the changing rooms with the Mrs (no silly comments...). The tour of the San Siro passed off without incident... (my brother seems to know everyone famous. He went to a wedding a few years back and sat on the same table as Bryan Robson. That's bragging gold!)
That surely does not count. I might as well say I met all of The Stone Roses at once when I went to Heaton Park back in June 2012...
I was on the empty pitch stood next to him, and then had a chat as we walked into the changing rooms... Before the whole tour group cottoned on and started the pictures. Think that counts? Did you get the impression he was miles away?!
I was walking past Old Trafford through some crowds distracted and oblivious to the fact that they were parting to let a car pass behind us. The car's horn sounded and I jumped out the way apologising - it turned out to be Roy Keane. Was waiting at a junction in Guiseley, Leeds and noticed a very slow stream of traffic heading towards us. Impatiently wishing the lead car would hurry up and get past I then noticed its registration - W17DAS. Yep, it was Deano travelling at about 25mph in a 40 limit, causing a stream of traffic behind him and subsequently causing the crossroad junction I was at to start queuing.
When electronics were still in their infancy, ie Betamax/VHS/Video 2000 recorders and Commodore and Atari along with Sinclair were starting the computer revolution that didn't need a degree in understanding them even if games, Space Invaders and the such were played on them in cartridge form, I use to go to Earles Court every year to see all the latest stuff and they always had some stars appearing. Amongst those I met were Michaela Strachan, Kim Wilde, who wasn't too pleased at being asked for her autograph and Roger Taylor, who despite 2 gorillas with him signed my programme and asked if I had enjoyed the show. But I suppose the best one was when I took my family to Salou on holiday, when Beverley Travel were on the go, I set aside 1 day to go to Barcelona as I wanted to see Camp Nou. I could have booked an organised trip but for 2 adults and 2 kids it was rather expensive so I made my own arrangement booking train seats for the family. We got to Barcelona and walking round the outside of the stadium, the walls were about 15ft high when we came upon a door that was open. So being a cheeky sod I ushered my family through this door only to find myself on the Barcelona training area and there in front of me was one Terry Venables, then manager, Garry Lineker, and Steve Archibald. Terry looked at me and wife and 2 kids walking over to him and I explained who I was and what I was doing. He was great he just said follow me and so we did and he gave us a grand tour of the place, took us in the directors box and in their cinema that shows all their greatest players and matches all day long. Then the trophy room and finally said he would have to go and enjoy the rest of our stay. But when he had gone the wife said I've got the camera in my bag ........ arrrrrrhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Claire Balding at Leeds train station. Absolutely lovely woman, happily stopped and chatted at length about horses then signed a copy of The Sun I had on me. Said "take care and good luck Dave". Tony Blackburn at a Real Radio Academy event. Nice fella. I asked him if he'd ever been starstruck and he waxed lyrical about a story of having lunch with Sinatra in New York. Heather Small of M People, went up on stage and got a kiss after doing brilliant actions (if I say so myself) to Movin On Up at a dance weekender in Paris circa '94. Mrs spent 2hrs in first class back from KingsX with Jane McDonald, said she's funny as and absolutely filthy.
Ian Moor in sleepers-fella that won stars in their eyes as Chris De Burgh. Timmy Mallett. I asked him how Tommy Boyd was. I knew they really don't like each other. He gave me a forced smile.
