Borini wants games

FABIO BORINI is desperate to have a clear run of games at Sunderland after being plagued by freak injuries during the last two years.

The on-loan Liverpool frontman went under the knife THREE times last season following his £10.5million move from Roma – once on his left shoulder and twice on a broken bone in his foot, which failed to heal after the first operation.

Borini suffered similar misfortune at Roma, where a promising return of nine goals in 20 Serie A starts was interrupted by two months on the sidelines due to surgery on his right shoulder.

After a five-month stint on the treatment table limited him to just five Premier League starts last season, the 22-year-old is desperate to prove himself with a sustained run of games for Sunderland after joining the Black Cats on loan.

Borini told the Echo: “My first thought is to have a clear season with nothing major happening.

“I’ve always proved myself in the short-term – Swansea was a three-month loan (where he scored six in eight Championship starts) and then it was three months at Roma before injuries.

“I would like at least six or seven months without getting injured, which would mean all season.

“Last season was tough, mostly because of the injuries, not the move.

“Big-money moves happen in football. So do injuries, but they take you down, especially when all you want is to do well for a new team.

“Basically, your body pulls you out.

“I wanted to prove myself at Liverpool last season and I couldn’t really do it. I’ve come here to do that now.

“I always seem to have had injuries which are not the usual ones.

“Last season was basically the bone in your foot that you never use, but it’s very painful when you break it.

“You can’t really do much either because it’s in the middle of your foot. When you walk, it’s the only one that makes the other bones move.”

Borini insists the prospect of leaving Anfield on loan wasn’t broached by Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers until the final week of the transfer window.

But the Italian international admits he sensed it could be a possibility after being pushed down the pecking order on Merseyside.

“I didn’t know I would be able to go on loan, but obviously I was thinking about it,” said the former Chelsea youngster.

“Obviously with the players at Liverpool – (Luis) Suarez and (Daniel) Sturridge – I felt I needed games.

“You never know what is going to happen in the transfer window so at the end, I had a chat with Brendan and it seemed I wasn’t going to be in his plans this year.”

Borini is expected to make his Sunderland debut in Saturday’s visit of Arsenal and says a hamstring niggle in training is unlikely to scupper his hopes of playing a part for the Black Cats.

“I’m fully fit now... kind of!” he added.

“I had a bit of a problem this week with a hamstring, but it’s nothing serious. It’s just adapting to a different kind of work in training.

“My body needs to adapt that’s all.

“At Liverpool, we managed to play games during the week behind closed doors too, so the players who didn’t play as much were helped in their fitness.”

I think Fletch & Altidore will be infront of him?

If you pay 12 million and 6 million respectively on 2 players and then put a loan player in front of either it is madness!

I'm more bothered about winning games myself. The fact that he can pull a defender out of position with ease (led to believe this is one of his strong points) and we've now got a forward pass specialist. Can you imagine the space Fletch can find himself in with the ball. Fletch, Borini and Ki look like a match made in heaven.

It's pointless arguing the toss anyway. Paolo has said he'll rotate so I expect that's what he'll do. I'd like to see if it's works first before I say Paolo is wrong. Sit back and watch it unfold innit.

    "I'm fully fit now-kind of"

'Kind of' doesn't fill me with confidence.

He gets his go if he justifies it with his play in training/reserves &/or impressing when he comes off the bench.

Could be a useful asset. Do we know if there's an option to buy?

Not if he is only kinda fit . I wouldn't risk it if I was pdc . He could be one of these unfortunate players who is going to be injured and getting back to match fitness all season .
Been talking to some Liverpool fans and they rate him. I would like to see him do What Bri is talking about it`s good to have options .

Well beck only got the nod up front through injuries, when all fit he played on the left.

I return to the point that why would we pay 6 million for Altidore to sit on the bench?

Im not bothered if a loan signing starts infront of any of our players if its the best thing for our team.
If we got Messi on loan we wouldnt keep him on the bench would we!

There's usually an option to buy in most loan agreements apparently but they're usually weighted in favour of the loaner cost-wise.

If he proves himself Liverpool will take him back, it wouldn't matter what the agreement is.

How many loanees have we wanted to keep and failed to do so? We need to stop worrying about keeping loan players and just accept they're here to do a short-term job for the season, to do a good job for us (hopefully) and to prove themselves for their home club.

Is Borini the new Messi then? Erm I think not.

I'm firmly in the loan players should never be picked over permanent ones and have always held that view. If he gets the nod over Altidore or Fletcher this weekend then it's a disgrace IMO. If after 12 games neither of them are performing, then he deserves a chance but no way before them.

Course hes not the new Messi.

My point is, if a loan signing is better than what we have, then id play him if it was going to inrease our chances of getting 3 points.
Like Altidore, ive only seen Borini play about half a dozen games, but if he turns out to be the better of the 2 then of course id want him to start!

If he can have the same impact for us as Lukaku did for WBA then ill be over the moon, cause they wouldnt have finished anywhere near the top half without him!

He should not be first choice though, that's my point.

Altidore and Fletcher should be first pick for a dozen games together before alternatives are discussed. We made Wellbeck and then he went back to man Utd and we were knackered again. I don't want to make Borini just to benefit the bin dippers.

Or, are we all happy being a feeder club for man Utd and Liverpool? I'm not.
