Admission from Blatter that the choice of Qatar as the WC venue in 2022 could have been a mistake.

Mistake? Is this the word they call it? I could think of a more accurate (less PC) word. How do tens of individuals make a collective mistake in thinking Qatar was the perfect venue for a WC tournament: the ideal climate, the best enthusiastic biggest crowds, major footballing power. There must have been some persuasive factors in play fr that collective brainstorm.

    Any credible answers welcome. <ok>

I think is should be given to Iceland, its nice and cool there, and you get a free Volcano with every goal your team scores.

as much as I think it will be interesting to see it hosted in new places organized in different locations, but comn !! they should had asked themselves this QS 2 years ago when they decided to give it to Qatar .. this decision shows how corrupted FIFA is, and if they claim they are not corrupted, this decision then simply means they are a bunch of brainless people .. so whether they did it bcz they corrupted or bcz they are stupid (imo they are both), they should all resign starting with Mr Bladder

Russia was a mistake as well but I'm sure he was paid a massive amount for that decision as well.

It is a ****ing huge country with transport and security problems. Travelling around Russia will make travelling around South Africa look like a piece of cake.

There is also the probable apathy towards the competition / inability to fund tickets of the locals to take into account. I like athletics and watched much of the recent World Championships. The stadium was practically empty for the morning sessions and half full for the evening sessions other than Usain Bolt night and the women's pole vault final as Isinbayeva was competing for a gold. You can't expect travelling fans to fill the stadiums at a World Cup in Russia.

Just one of the reasons why international football is largely bollox.

Don't think those are the main problems with Russia. It's a huge country, but only the western third is hosting the WC. From Kaliningrad to Yekaterinburg isn't as far as from California to New York in 94, or Manaus to Porto Alegre next summer. And football is much bigger in Russia than athletics - they got a crowd of 54,000 when they played Portugal at home in qualifying, which is the same as Portugal got for the reverse fixture. And the stadiums will mostly be full of travelling fans anyway.

The real problems with Russia will be the racism and homophobia. You can pretty much guarantee there will be some attacks on gay or black fans during the competition, which the Russian authorities will blame on the victims failing to respect Russian laws or culture or whatever, and FIFA will conveniently ignore then claim Russia has made so much progress since the WC was awarded.

Have never understood the argument that giving the WC or Olympics to a country will spur it to improve its human rights or be more tolerant. It's like saying we should give convicted criminals a reward instead of sending them to prison, it's completely the wrong way round. FIFA and the IOC would send a much stronger message if they told the likes of Russia and China that they could kiss any chance of hosting a major competition goodbye until they actually did something other than bluster and BS.

Never has a major sporting venue decision been so obviously the result of massive back handers.

The very fact that he had the brass neck to stand on the platform & announce it back in 2010, showed the level to which that man & his cohorts had sunk in terms of their pursuit of a bung.

It's laughable that only 2 years post the announcement after their supposed thorough dissection of the bids prior to the award of 2022, did it dawn on someone that the desert in June / July might be a tad hot for humans.......

    Blatter is a complete disgrace.

Personally I think we should refuse to play in the Qatar World cup ( if we were to qualify ).

Or we could just utterly fail to qualify. In protest, of course <ok>

I love Blatter's attempt to front the whole thing now by claiming Europeans are unreasonable to protest about FIFA deciding to hold the tournament in a completely unsuitable country and then insist that the entire footballing calendar be changed just so they don't have to acknowledge their own **** up.

I'm off to suggest to the IOC that the next Winter Olympics take place in Tunbridge Wells. If they dare point out that the place has no mountains and **** all snow I'll claim that they're being highly unreasonable, and that the only sports that should take place should be ice skating and curling.

Qatar is the most stupid choice of venue for a Worldwide sporting event in the history of sport.

It's got a population 4 times that of Luxembourg & has no sporting or football history

The only thing it has going for it, is that it's the richest country on the planet. Blatter & his chums immediately saw the potential to stick their snouts in that particular over flowing trough.

And perhaps the worst climate for holding a summer football tournament. It's so hot that their national football team plays its summer home games in a 10,000 capacity air conditioned stadium, and yet they expect the whole world to play in 40 degree heat in much larger stadiums?

If Holland and Belgium have to cohost the Euros, how the **** can a tiny country like Qatar host it on its own? Never mind four times as much as Luxembourg, the population is less than Wales, less than Manchester.

And as with Russia, the country is in a **** state already. It's essentially a feudal monarchy with no elected legislature, no freedom of speech, most of the migrant labours are essentially slaves, homosexuality is illegal, and Qatar openly embraces torture as part of its legal system. So the country is actually worse than Russia and China for human rights.

None of this matters to FIFA of course, who will happily line up to get their cut and thus legitimise yet another backwards regime.

    Exactly right.

When Blatter stood there & announced it was going there, he was giving the World a 2 fingered salute, as it was obvious to a blind man that he'd had a bung the size of the national debt of Greece ffs.
