Who would you say was your best ever striker? I know Shearers is the obvious one but you have had a few other good strikers who would walk into todays starting 11. Also you have to remember Shearers was playing in a team with a much overall lower quality than your squad today which did make him look better than he was. I mean you didn't have the skills of Hatem Ben Arfa or the tackling and destructive ability of Sissoko and Tiote or even the delicate touch and accuracy of Cabaye. Your team today definitely has some very good players in key positions.

Who would you say is your overall best ever striker?

Yes, that's right. He looked better than he was. So much better than he really was that Sir Alex wanted to sign him.

Unless I am mistaken he was one of the greatest forwards, certainly the greatest centre-forward, that the Premiership has ever seen. One also has to consider the fact that he somehow, despite not being as good as he looked, he managed to get the club record for goals scored.

God, I thought that the WUMs had grown up and gone away. How would the Manchester United board react if I wrote "That Ryan Giggs fellow: he was alright but he wasn't as good as he looked because he had a fantastic team to carry him."

Anyway, what's the weather like down there in Surrey?

Oh wow, a lot of hostility here on the Newcastle board, didn't expect that.

I wasn't trying to disrespect. Shearer was a great player by all means, I was just exercising my right in regards to displaying my own opinion which is one of skepticism when it comes to the idea that Shearer was 'the best ever'. He was good, sure, but come on, compare Shearer to the likes of:

    Zola
    Henry
    Rooney
    Cole
    Drogba
    Van Nistelrooy
    Van Persie
    Di Canio
    Cantona
    Owen

Put aside all your Newcastle bias for a second, if you will, and you can't SURELY believe that Shearer belongs in that list.

Again, absolutely no disrespect meant what-so-ever, so please drop the hostility. Keep the thread clean guys.

i fail to see how Shearer doesn't belong in that list, he scored more than any of those players in the prem.
your opinion though, my other strikers for Newcastle in the prem would be cole, ferdinand, beardsley

Lets get the thread back on topics guys.
Fact is I believe Newcastle are a truly great team, with outstanding players. I meant no disrespect at all. You are a great club, you really are.

Who do YOU believe is your best striker ever. Lets cease the arguments.

Someone who says 'I believe Newcastle are a truly great team, with outstanding players' needs to go read a book on the basics of football.

We haven't been a truly great team since the fifties with one brief flirtation with pseudo-success in the mid-nineties. As for outstanding players, we had one bid for one of our blue chips last transfer window. Why didn't they all rush at once I wonder.

You need to patronise someone else, somewhere else.

No, come on, you are a really good team if you look closely at each player you have in each position. You have a very balanced starting 11 on paper with players of necessary quality and traits in each position. You really do have some outstanding players. You shouldn't put your club down Nutter, always be positive and see what you have. Newcastle are a great team.

Yes, putting aside all blinkers and things and, yes, I do.

The problem is that Shearer has been around for so long that most people have forgotten him in his prime; before his knees went. You want someone big, strong, ugly who can shoot, control, hold up the ball, head the thing in then he was your man. If you look around at the number of goals he's scored in his career in the Premiership and find that no-one else has beaten his total that must tell you something.

It can't be because he had a poor team behind him it's because he was very, very good. I remember before his knees went and he was regarded as one of the best crossers in the game. Now, not many people consider that part of his play or have forgotten it but he was really, and truly, very excellent.

That list of yours is a good list and I believe that none of those players here would deny that Shearer belonged in that list.

Newcastle did have a period when then they seemed to churn out a few great players in a few years and this may have got people thinking that perhaps there's an inflation, for wont of a better word, of appreciation of players but, seriously, as a footballer all the plaudits that Shearer received he deserved.

I'm too young to know of Milburn playing, though Tony Bliar seems to recall watching him from the portals of his time machine, but if I am asked for the three best footballers from Newcastle I would say Beardsley, Shearer and, from reputation, Milburn.

No-one else came close. Not even Gascoigne in his prime, in my view, deserved to be among those three named.

Back to your list. You missed out Lineker which I find interesting; if you had van Nistelrooy then why not ol'd Jug Ears? They played the same similar game and both were very excellent and poaching the six yard box. Cantona was more of a character than a top whack footballer as far as I am concerned; but who (apart from a certain Palace fan) could not like him? Rooney? Hard to compare with the likes of Shearer; I would say that Rooney is a shadow of Beardsley (and I am not saying that because he's from Newcastle -- I used to watch Liverpool so that I could watch Beardsley; arguably the greatest British midfielder I have ever seen).

Drogba is/was a great player but as good as Shearer? No, I don't think so. Cole? Certainly not. Zola was great but again different in style.

Owen? Don't talk to me of him.

Seriously, I think that you underestimated Shearer. I have no idea of your age but I remember hearing about his debut for Southampton and bagging a hat trick against the Gunners. Now, that has to be someone special right there.
