A projected Milan side in their prime would have cost an eye watering £419m, while a select Newcastle first XI would set you back £306m. Sky Tyne and Wear estimated the cost by comparing the old school stars to deals for some modern equivalents playing today, and their current transfer value. Steve Harper Goalkeeper: Steve Harper. Harper spent 20-years at Newcastle United and is being honoured with this testimonial. A terrific servant if not always being first choice for most of his time there but only because he was kept out by one of the worldâs best âkeeperâs in Shay Given. Sky Tyne and Wear reckon that Harper would still command a decent fee in his prime and would probably move for somewhere in the region of £5m which is what Maarten Stekelenburg cost Fulham from Roma. John Beresford Defender: John Beresford. Beresford was an attacking left-back who was an important part of Kevin Keeganâs âentertainersâ at St. Jamesâ Park. Made 179 league appearances for United and is arguably the best left-back of the modern era to play for the club. We think that Beresford would probably command a fee of around £7m nowadays, similar to the deal that took Jose Enrique from Newcastle to Liverpool. Nikos Dabizas Defender: Nikos Dabizas. Dabizas cost £2m when he joined Newcastle from Olympiacos in 1998 and went on to make 130 league appearances for the club. He was an important player in the team under Sir Bobby Robson in particular. As a Greek international when he joined, Dabizas would most likely command a decent fee these days and we reckon he would cost around the same as Stephen Caulker who moved from Tottenham to Cardiff for £9m. Steve Watson Defender: Steve Watson. A graduate of Newcastleâs academy, Watson went on to make over 200 appearances for the club. A versatile player and an England youth international who cost Everton £2.5m when he left in 2000. With a premium on English talent now, we think Watsonâs versatility would probably command a fee of around £8mâ¦but we canât think of anyone to equate him to. Brian Kilcline Defender: Brian Kilcline. Kilcline only made 32 appearances for Newcastle between 1992 and 1994 and was Keeganâs first signing at the club. He was club captain and during his time at St. Jamesâ Park and was later named by Keegan as the most important signing he made. Kilcline was an important member of the Keeganâs early Newcastle side but there arenât many players who had his personalty â not just for his hair, but for his importance to the side, weâre likening him to Fabricio Coloccini who cost £10m when he moved to Newcastle from Deportivo La Coruna. Rob Lee Midfielder: Rob Lee. Spent 10-years at Newcastle United after costing only £700,000 from Charlton. Lee went on to make over 300 league appearances for the club and gain 21 England caps. Kevin Keegan called him the best midfielder in Britain when United were at their entertaining best. Lee was a complete Premier League midfielder in his day and we think he would cost the same as Marouane Fellaini who moved to Man United from Everton for £27.5m. David Ginola Midfielder: David Ginola. A mercurial talent who scored quite brilliant goals and kept thousands enthralled at St. Jamesâ Park. Had it not been for Gerard Houllier, Ginola would have added to his 17 caps for France. In his two seasons at Newcastle, Ginola made 58 league appearances and is remembered as a modern great at the club. We think that Ginola would be hot property these days and would rival the £42m that Arsenal paid for Mesut Ozil. Nolberto Solano Midfielder: Nolberto Solano. Nobby was a special crosser of the ball in his day. Joined Newcastle as a relative unknown and went on to be a firm favourite amongst fans. In both spells at Newcastle, Solano provided both goals and assists and having cost less than £2.5m when he first joined remains a great piece of business by Kenny Daliglish. We reckon Solano would be a player that would cost a big club a lot of money and with his almost guaranteed return of assists would cost a similar amount to Jesus Navas who recently went to Man City from Sevilla for £23m. Peter Beardsley Forward: Peter Beardsley. Beardsley was a special talent at his best, in both spells at Newcastle. As a young player Beardsley went the long way round to play for his home-town team but in his first period with the club scored 61 goals in 147 games and moved to all-conquering Liverpool. Six years, and a spell with Everton later, Beardsley returned to score 47 goals in 129 matches under Keegan. One of the best footballers to come out of Newcastle, Beardsley would be a much coveted player these days and we think would rival the £56m Real Madrid paid for Kaka in 2009. Les Ferdinand Forward: Les Ferdinand. Ferdinand had a brief but prolific spell at Newcastle and cost £6m at the time. He scored 41 goals in 68 league games before moving to Spurs and was lethal alongside Alan Shearer. Sir Les would command a hefty transfer fee these days weâre sure and would probably eclipse the £30m Man City paid for Edin Dzeko when they bought him from Borussia Dourtmund. Alan Shearer Forward: Alan Shearer. 206 goals in 404 games for Newcastle United says everything about Shearerâs contribution to the clubâs history. As a world record transfer of £15m, Shearer more than paid off the money Keegan invested in him over the decade he played for the club. As a record holder in more than one way, we canât think of a player whoâd be worth more nowadays so, we think heâs pricelessâ¦but as we had to find a figure, we think £87m. Im not actually sure whether the author is having a laugh or genuinely believes what he has wrote...
Bloody nora! Edit : i cant stop pissing myself here, beardsley = kaka, and shearer was better than world record signings ronaldo, zidane & bale Rob lee £27.5m ffs Kilcline It has to be a joke, surely Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! please log in to view this image
jesus H. i hope this was meant as a joke. was it written by that Lee Bell-end Rider ? Kilcline for Colocini? Beardsley and Kaka, Rob Lee and Felaini. you couldn't make it up......
Steve Harper 5 million!! He milked them for years sitting on his arse. 157 games in near on 20 seasons! He spent the whole of his career not wanting to be anything else then a 'bench warmer' and they treat him like some kind of superstar! Can you imagine how we'd feel if in 20 years time if he was our second keeper. They use the term 'super star' for any old ****e!
206 in 404 for Shearer - great record but Ronaldo scores an average of 1 a game or there abouts doesn't he - so how does that make Shearer worth more? (Not arguing how good Shearer was but he was nowehere near the player Ronaldo is) I wonder what they'd value SKP or Quinny at when they both played for us?? Probably 3m each!! As for Brian Kilcline - £10m??? FFS!!!
£87 MILLION FOR SHEARER ????? wtfck? He was good in the premier league but when he got to 2 world cup finals he was massively out of his depth (a header vs tunisia and a penalty were in his only goals) If he is worth £87 m you talking 870 million for lineker.
