England striker Daniel Sturridge will take no part in Tuesday's World Cup qualifier in Ukraine because of injury. A statement on the FA website read: "Club England medical staff have been in constant contact with their counterparts at Liverpool Football Club since he returned there on Thursday. "His injury has not progressed as had been hoped and it is now clear that Sturridge will not be fit for the match in Kiev on Tuesday evening." Although the news will not be a surprise to Roy Hodgson, the manager would have been quietly hoping the on-song forward would recover after aggravating a groin injury in Liverpool's triumph over Manchester United last weekend. The 24-year-old also missed England's 4-0 win on Friday night against Moldova, but injuries to Manchester United's Wayne Rooney and West Ham's Andy Carroll, plus the suspension of Danny Welbeck, leaves England with a selection headache. With two goals in his first two England games, it now seems that Southampton's Rickie Lambert will be tasked with leading the line in Kiev - with Tottenham's Jermain Defoe the only other fit striker in the squad. The FA confirmed that Hodgson will not be drafting in any replacements to the squad of 23, who are due to travel on Sunday evening. With England leading Group H, the pressure is on Ukraine to go for the spoils and they will be confident of upsetting the visitors having smashed nine goals past San Marino on Friday. ---------------------- We'll get some stick if he starts V the Swans (which obv hope he can) And why doesnt Hodgson call another strike into the squad?
Well Hodgson is out of options really and he's got defoe. really the issue in my mind is given our graciousness and honestly in these matters compared to some clubs.... well did he do serious damage v utd? England to play for a draw v ukraine... roy is already talking about disasters and moaning on while gerrard is trying to talk up the team and encourage them to at least blooming try.
Glad he is not playing and if he is not fully fit for the Swansea game he should not be risked. We need him to recover and then play, there is nothing worse than playing a half fit player who then picks up more injuries and is in and out of the team.
What a shame.... Doesn't make much difference as all England will do is sit back and play for a draw anyway
I'm hoping it's nothing as bad as the media suggest and he's simply being removed from the squad as a precaution to give him time to rest and let a little niggle heal. Hoping... We need a fully fit Studge.
Rather he (and Gerrard, and Henderson, and Johnson, and Sterling, etc) didn't play for England anyway!
No idea how Henderson doesn't get picked at all. 2nd only to Lampard last season (English midfielder stats) and he has started great this season.
Thats easy, Lampard's a Londoner and we dont have a manager who picks the best team because he hasnt got a bloody clue I feel Lampard should be in the squad but not starting ffs
Lampard's a good player and I thought had a pretty good season too. He's ahead of Hendo still, but Jordan should definitely be in the squad.
Great news! Hopefully he'll be fit for Swansea. They've got Rickie Lambert anyway right? Really don't care about England games, just Liverpool, especially not these generally dull as dishwater qualifiers.
