When I came to see you against Walsall t'other week, one disappointment was not getting a chance to try an oatcake. Spookily and totally unconnected, a girl at work mentioned a recipe her friend has for some posh sounding scran, that to all intent and purpose was an oatcake, so any of you care to share your favorite homemade recipes?
Give me your address in PM HCA and I'll mail you some. Home made recipes won't be the same mate! It's a tradition here in the Potteris that every Sunday morning it's a bacon breakfast with oatckes. They are mainly a savoury dish so anything with bacon or sausage with cheese, beans, tomatoes or eggs will just about cut it! http://www.bbc.co.uk/stoke/content/articles/2006/04/19/local_heroes_oatcake_intro_feature.shtml

I've always bought oatcakes from the shops, get a couple filled there, and another dozen to take home for through the week I know a lad who moved to Spain, I asked him how he copes without his oatcake breakfast and he told me he found a recipe on the BBC website, just had a scan, and I assume this must be the one; http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/staffordshireoatcake_92371 Never used the recipe myself so I don't know how well it will turn out, especially if you're not sure how an oatcake should be. After I've used up what I've got in, I might try making some. I always melt the cheese onto them under the grill though, not in the frying pan as the BBC page says. Grill the rougher side for a minute, don't toast it, just get it a little crispy, flip, add cheese and grill until melted, whack in any other fillings, roll it up, and get it down thee. Or fold and use a knife and fork if you're a bit posh. Best with crispy bacon, extra mature cheddar and brown sauce, or chuck in anything else you'd have in a full English, it's all good. As Moelfre says, High Lane deliver, as do http://www.staffordshireoatcakes.com .
Cheers for this. I've been making them similar to the BBC recipe, so I'll try a few by their method. Been adding a touch of cinnamon and vanilla too, and I'm planning to chuck some chili and garlic into the mix,
You can't add vanilla or cinnamon! Totally a savory dish, best served with cheese, mushrooms sausage and brown sauce - grilled, not microwaved. I'm making my colleagues at work try them - surprisingly they have not made it to Nottingham. I collect my oatcakes when we visit family in Stoke at weekends - the Womble Inn on the ironmarket in Castle are nice.
A good idea is to roll up a sausage in an oatcake and use your fingers to pick it up and just bite and eat, lovely Try it just buttered, plain but simple. Also try it buttered and with raspberry jam on it. Cheers My Dad's side of the family are all from Stoke, in fact my grandma worked in Wedgewood and lived down the road from St Mary's Church in Nantwich. Sooner or later we get through them quickly and have to go and get some more. We are going up towards the end of October and we are down to our last 6! How can I last till then
Don't think I'd like cinnamon or vanilla in mine, chili might be good though, I sometimes have mine with a little chipotle and garlic sauce dripped on the cheese before grilling.
Vanilla and cinnamon aren't just for sweet dishes: They aren't sweet at all. Give it a go, no-one will get hurt
One of my mates has em fried and served up with ice cream and fruit. I've thought about giving it a go a few times, but everytime I see an oatcake I get a craving for bacon!
Not tried the recipes suggested yet, but I'm planning to order some of the mixture that's available on one of the links posted. I can certainly see the attraction.
