English football is at a low. The national team have not made the semi-finals of a major tournament since 1996, while fewer Premier League clubs are putting their faith in domestic talent.

Football Association chairman Greg Dyke outlined his plans on Wednesday to produce an England team capable of winning the 2022 World Cup.
But what needs to be done to make that goal a realistic possibility?

    BBC Sport Article

Interesting article with Chris Waddle, Danny Mills, Dave Whelan and Rick Parry give their views on what needs to be done. What actually is wrong with our National Team?

Find talent, coach talent and use it. The PL needs to put a quota on the use of english players. ie. each starting 11 most have a minimum of 3 english players.

Look at how clubs in Germany and Spain use home grown players.

We push big lads with big engines at youth level.

At the expense of the more frail and gifted.

Bit like a well set up Championship side after a draw. We should be looking for a Barcelona side after a win.

Anyone who read Gerrad's autobiography will see he was overlooked for being too small. This isn't about the number on English players in he premier league as if they are good enough they would play. It is about getting em good enough younger. Quotas won't solve anything and may make our top league less competitive.

We need top clubs to buy English as they are the best. Saying they are over priced is a bit misleading as it suggests they are good enough but too much cash. Reality is they are invariably not good enough so the ones who are cost bucket loads as rare.

We need modern coaches and proper youth set ups from a very early age. And a lot of patience as his will take ten years!

Quotas are not the answer. Clubs want the best and we have to supply the best. Not ask teams to pick players on nationality. Quotas are not the solution and wont do anything to produce better talent. Lets get teams full of English on MERIT!!

Our young players need to be playing more, players like Rodwell, Chamberlain, Smalling, Sinclair, Bertrand, they aren't playing enough for their clubs.

    Ruddy
    Walker Cahill Smalling Gibbs
    Rodwell Wilshere
    Chamberlain Rooney Zaha
    Sturridge

A future England side? Welbeck in the future? Carroll? Ruddy deserves a chance, Hart makes a lot of mistakes I feel and isn't pushed for a place at Man City. Give the kids a chance.

We should cheat like everyone else, let talented kids from Brazil and Spain live here for five years, then claim they're English.

They should have put me in charge, it's a piece of piss this international football lark.

So in a sense, it's the Big Clubs in English Football that are ruining the National Team's potential due to the fact that they sign the young prospects, then sit them in the reserves/bench. Clubs such as Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea etc planning for their future has postponed the experience and development of the younger prospects that the Country produces.

In Germany there used to be a cap on foreign players, they lifted it about six years ago, but for some reason still haven't had an enormous influx of foreign players.

    There's 45%(249) foreign players in the 1. Bundesliga, in the 2. Bundesliga it's 31%(145) and in the 3. Bundesliga, it's just 15%.

It's what nearly every other country does and I've never really understood why England don't do it. People piss and moan about the senior team never achieving internationally, but when England are running low on talent, where is this World Cup winning team going to come from? Tiago Illori, who just signed for Liverpool was born in London. He has yet to play for Portugal and is supposed to be **** hot, why shouldn't he play for England?

What's more important, winning an international trophy or just having English players ranked 16th in the World?
