According to the Sunday People, Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermain Defoe will turn down West Brom’s advances and hold out hope for a last-minute bid from Newcastle United.

30-year-old England striker Jermain Defoe has been on the fringes at Tottenham for a while and things look no different this season.

Manager Andre Villas-Boas has invested heavily in attacking midfield players and looks set to play just one up front, with summer signing Roberto Soldado his preferred option.

That will leave Defoe with just Europa League starts to look forward to, as was the case on Thursday, when he netted twice and displayed his finishing qualities.

Defoe is a player I’ve wanted to see brought to Newcastle for a while and the striker briefly played under Newcastle manager Alan Pardew when at West Ham.

I think Jermain realises that he would be idolised in the north-east, as all goal scorers are, and sees a move to Tyneside as an attractive one as his career comes towards the end.

The clear sticking points are a £6 million fee and his £65,000-a-week wages, with the former unlikely to be matched considering that Defoe is the wrong side of 30.

That will leave West Brom and Stoke City in the race for the Tottenham star, but let’s hope that the dream move for Jermain Defoe and many Newcastle fans can be completed.

The thing is with Adebayor very likely leaving, unless we bring someone else in before 11pm tomorrow night there is no way we will sell him as Soldado would be our only proven striker.

It's annoyed me that Pardew has said anyone interested in Cabaye needs to be bidding early tomorrow...talk about pot, kettle, black.

Would love to know how many actual bids we've made this summer.

As much as I rate him highly, Defoe gets a nosebleed any further north than Watford.

Defoe is quality but fairly injury prone these days. There are players available we should be going for. However I think it is fair to think that we'd have made a move by now if we were going to. I'm not sure the club is interested in investing at this stage. I think Pards will just have to work with what he has and accept that Ashley views taking this gamble as acceptable. I'm just not sure what the whole JK charade was about. Probably best not to overthink it because very little makes sense at our club these days. Literally spinning the roulette wheel and seeing if it turns out alright

The only hope we've got of signing Jermaine Defoe is that Mike Ashley is a Spurs fan and probably likes him.
30 years old, injury prone, 5' 6" tall and on high wages says we won't be in for him.

Not only that, there has to be a resale value too. So if we get in a proven 30 year old player then there is no way that Ashley is going to make a profit on the sale next season.

Therefore, for this reason alone, Bent won't come to Newcastle.

Ashley only buys players that he can sell. And to sell a player he has to showcase them. Which means that he needs a thin squad so that players can be in the shop window week in and week out. Having a good sized squad is not part of his business plan at all.

I think it's more a case of "is there more than a 50% chance that the current squad get to 17th, with the current manager and DoF?". Answer's yes, so we don't spend. Last season, the answer, in Jan, appeared to be "no", so we spent money. It'll be the same this season, and every season. Survival at minimal cost until Mike recoups enough to leave. Club owes him around £100m, with another £30m due to be paid back over the next two years. The less players we buy, the quicker he goes.
