I've missed most of this second half, but from what I have seen of it, and continuing on from the first half performance. We've looked so disjointed today. Don't think anyone has really put in a good performance. Looked quite lethargic. Certainly not the high energy pressing and passing game we are used to. Lot's of misplaced passes and not the usual neat link up play. I think for our system to work, we ideally need Clyne and Shaw to be playing. Or at least one of them. If we are going to play without wingers, we need our full backs providing the width with overlapping runs. We haven't had that yet this season. I don't blame Chambers for that so much as I think it's fair that he concentrates on his defensive game. But I think it's time Clyne came back into the side. It is a worrying trend, going back to the end of last season, that we are not scoring enough goals. Yes our finishing has been poor in some games (Sunderland), but we are not creating enough good chances for our strikers either. I have focused on our shortcomings so far, but I think it's also fair to say that Norwich played very well. Passed it around nicely and were very solid and organised (as we knew they would be at home). They deserved the win I feel.
Norwich defended well, we had a few chances and could have easily won today. Clyne and Shaw in and we will look a proper threat again. Lovren worried their defence more than most of our team. 270 minutes without a goal from open play isn't a good statistic but we have played very well at times so not worried. FWIW I still think we have the ability to string wins together many times this season and challenge for 6th place, losing away to Norwich will happen to the best no doubt they were very good today. They defended expertly. Lovren motm, no one played particularly well for us today, jwp looked the best i've seen him going forward and looked decent in the centre. Pretty much everyone else other than the youngsters, lallana and lovren I would expect to play better in future.
Not just the width of the post, but also questionable linesman work has cost us another two open play goals.
Oh I bet the top teams are s**tting themselves at the thought of playing us Need a quick wide player to come in so when we can't break the defence down ( like today ) can offer us a different tactic when required. Poor to lose to Norwich but gotta learn from this game quick before the " pochettino out " threads start lol
Oh yeah, I'm not worried at all. If we sign a wide man over the next two days, I'll be exceptionally confident of a top ten finish. And even if we don't, I still think we'll have a chance of a top ten finish. Every chance of beating WH next, regardless. I'm just disappointed that, having wanted a natural wide man for a year now, we still haven't signed one. Even more so now that Punch has gone.
I also think if Schneiderlin still isn't up to it after the international break then Cork should start. I wasn't particularly impressed with either Wanyama or Schneiderlin today and I don't remember feeling let down by Cork much last season, he's certainly a more than capable player.
Bit of work to do in the next two weeks, but it's still early, so no need to panic yet. That is all. PS. Let's have Clyne and Shaw back now. That is all.
Wanyama was poor I thought, Lambert was anonymous, Lallana had his best game for us for a long time. All in all, Howard Webb had an absolute shocker.
Again, the result isn't the big concern, it's the shape of the team, where our chances are coming from (and more importantly, where they are not). We're playing so narrowly, which can be fine in some instances but against teams like Norwich who are well-drilled and have an excellent midfield, we're not creating much at all. We're still an out-and-out winger and a left back away from being done, methinks...Shaw's knocks are concerning enough that I'd really like a capable player to fill in, because having Fox means that we get 90 minutes of absolutely nothing of note going down the left.
