Cheikh M'Bengue

Sunderland face a battle with Rennes to sign Toulouse defender Cheikh M'Bengue.

Rennes want to sign a new left-back and Paolo Di Canio is also keen on reinforcing that position in his side.

M'Bengue's contract expires at the end of this season and he has refused to sign a new deal.

That has forced Toulouse to listen to offers for the 25-year-old, who looks set to move this summer.

Sunderland have their work cut out though as M'Bengue has spent 17 years with Toulouse and is settled in France.

The opportunity to continue his career there is a big draw for him and Rennes believe they hold the upper hand.

M'Bengue played for France Under-21s before switching allegiance to Senegal.

I'm a bit worried about the temperament of french players. I'd rather an italian.

Look as sessegone and cabye bye. The french (i know sess wasn't born in france but still) are renown for their attitude. Take a look at Cisse and N'diaye as well.. Ben Arfa has spat his dummy in the past.

Honestly why are french players so fkin difficult to sign. You'd think that 75% tax and a **** league would be an incentive to get out of France. (Plus french cheese is ****, and they can't make pasties)

Rennes have confirmed the signing of Cheikh M'Bengue on a three-year contract from Ligue 1 rivals Toulouse. The Senegalese left-back had recently been linked with a move to Sunderland.
