Sunderland manager Paolo Di Canio has insisted that he is prepared to forgive any of his players should they make mistakes during his time at the club. Stephane Sessegnon was arrested on Tuesday night in Newcastle on drink-driving charges, and will appear before magistrates in October, and after Phil Bardsley had been left in the cold after his misdemeanours towards the end of last season, one may expect the Benin international to be out of the picture at the Stadium of Light. "If a footballer says he is really sorry and you think he means it than yes, there is a second chance." Paolo DI Canio However, Di Canio claims that if players apologise and show a willing to make amends, he is prepared to operate a forgive and forget policy. "I will judge each case on its merits", Di Canio said. "If a footballer says he is really sorry and you think he means it than yes, there is a second chance. "But if you don't even think you are doing wrong and say sorry without really meaning it, that's different. "I can read my players and I know the ones who are genuinely sorry if they do something wrong. It's difficult to give second chances to somebody who breaks the rules and thinks that's normal, because they'll then do it again." It remains to be seen whether Sessegnon will be lucky enough to receive one of Di Canio's second chances, with rumours abound that he will be allowed to leave the club before the end of the transfer window. The midfielder will not travel to Selhurst Park for Sunderland's game against Crystal Palace this weekend.
Obviously Paolo wants him to stay then. The timing of this, Paolo isn't stupid. Expect Sess to stay and Paolo to use him as a starter or impact sub depending on tactics. I'm not fussed if he stays or leaves, I can see merits in both. If we do keep h beyond this season we should look to keep him till he's at the end of his career. £5m quoted might not be much dosh for him, but wait till he's 30, we'd get about £2m and you would always keep Sess in the team rather than get a scrawny couple of million.
I'm not so sure. PDC said he could forgive, not that he wouldnt get bollocked for it. Sess could have dropped as a reprimand.
True. Or he hasn't shown any remorse like Bardo, prompting Paolo to go public to remind them that it doesn't have to be the end. I reckon he wants gone. It's not the fact that he's been bad when he plays it's that he's been completely disinterested, This after some fantastic preseason form. Three years of pay day in the desert and he can put his feet up with his family for life without upping sticks again.
I love Sess, however, I 'm feeling for PDC right now, he has enough on his plate at the moment without team members behavior problems. Whatever happens, let's just hope it benefits the club.
We can't answer either questions yet. I know when Bardo ****ed up, If he got his head down and grafted he'd have been fine. But he tried to fight the club using the union. That clearly shows no responsibility for actions. I guess it remains to be seen what the crack is with Sess.
I have no reason to think Sess wants to go. He has had plenty of opportunity to push for a transfer in the last couple of seasons and he hasnt done. We dont even know if Sess was completely smashed while driving or just had a couple of glasses of wine too many while eating with his family (he has lived in France for a long time after all...). We shouldnt jump to any conclusions yet
