Very sad to read in today’s Racing Post that the wonderful Marling has passed away. She was beaten in the 1000 Guineas by Hatoof, arguably because Steve Cauthen gave her too much to do; but I think arguably her finest hour was in the 1992 Sussex Stakes when she rallied to deny Selkirk, subsequent winner of the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on soft ground. I have good reason to remember that day as I was at Goodwood and have a great shot of them battling in the final furlong. Punters looking at today’s Beverley card should bear in mind that here in deepest darkest East Yorkshire there was significant overnight rain so where it says "Good to Firm (watered)" they got a lot more "watered" than just turning the taps on! The big race of the day is on the Normandy coast at Deauville: the Grand Prix De Deauville. It will be no surprise that Cirrus Des Aigles will be favourite, but is he a good thing? It should give some good Arc pointers as the opposition includes Penglai Pavilion, trained by Andre Fabre but previously beaten by his Vancouverite; Singing, a fast-finishing fourth to Flintshire in the Grand Prix De Paris; Now We Can, unbeaten in three this term; and First Mohican representing yesterday’s Ebor winning connections. Goodwood could be another Richard Hughes benefit. Professor could reverse placings with Boom And Bust despite being 2lbs worse off in the Supreme Stakes as last time was a mile and this is seven furlongs; plus Afsare advertised the form yesterday. Hannon has won the last two runnings of this and out-of-form 2011 winner Libranno also goes. In the 3:20, I like Code Of Honor to reverse form with Broughton on 6lb better terms for a close-up fifth at the Glorious meeting. Where I will not be siding with Hughes is the 5:00, where Frankie Dettori gets the leg up on Bantam who has shown progressive form and is not badly treated for her win last time.

The Grand Prix De Deauville presents a big question about the future of Cirrus Des Aigles. Yet another failure by the horse that was the highest rated in Europe at the start of the season must really tell everybody that his return from injury has been a mistake. They cannot keep making excuses for poor performances and just retire their gelding and allow him to live out his remaining years owing nobody anything and leaving memories of a grand servant.
