    If he plays....

If Giles and Broad are happy for Bopara and Wright to share four overs, then he plays. Simple as that. There's no other spare batsman in the squad.

If they'd rather go with five bowlers (a risk having Broad as high as no.7 though!), then it's far less clear cut. Lumb, Hales, Morgan and Buttler are basically certain of their places, which leaves Carberry and the aforementioned Bopara and Wright to fill two spots. And Bopara did fine when he last pulled on an England shirt (in the Champions Trophy), and Wright is finally having some success with the bat in t20 cricket for England.

As for Briggs, it's a straight fight between him and Tredwell. Would expect Tredwell to play in at least one of the two games - hopefully they'll give Briggs the other though (ideally the Rose Bowl one), rather than play Tredwell in both.

Surely Carberry should get the nod over Lumb on this seasons form

Can't see that Lumb or Hales have done much wrong, and the fact that they open together for Notts and therefore have built up that partnership just suggests to me that England would be against splitting that up. For me, if Carberry wants to get into the team, it's going to have to be at no.3. At least to start with.

Of everyone to have scored 300+ runs in this year's domestic competition, only Rutherford had a higher strike rate than Lumb. Hales had the fourth highest, Carberry the seventh highest.

There's also the argument I guess that Carberry and Hales sort of play the same type of role in t20, whereas Lumb does not.

Whilst's Lumb's strike rate, and to a lesser extent his volume of runs, has been impressive this summer, his average was down at 30 and he only scored two 50s. But that's largely because batting for a sustained period of time was not his job for Notts. Hales, like Carberry and Kieswetter, was the one who'd generally be there after the powerplay as a bare minimum - and moreover, they also had Hussey, Patel and Taylor all still to come. They didn't need Lumb to score sackfuls, just take advantage of the powerplay.

So in some ways similar to the role that Vince played for us (although Lumb played it much, much better).

I'm not sure that Carberry and Hales would work as an opening partnership as well as one of them with Lumb would - assuming England give Lumb the same sort of complete freedom that Notts allowed him.

Can't remember but Carbs must have opened with Lumb for us a few imes. Certainly they must have batted together.

The latter must have happened. It certainly did many times in four day cricket. I'm not actually sure about the former, though I wouldn't put money on it. Adams opened with Lumb in limited overs cricket in 2009 and 2010, before he then left. And Carberry was in and out of the limited overs side during that period, and 2011 too - and when he did play, it was often down at no.5 or no.6.

I hope Carbs does get a chance to play. If there's one thing about the current England set up [as good a team as they have become] it is that there seems to me to be a bit of a cliche when it comes to new players coming in at the expense of one of their own.
Or am I being a bit unfair there?

There is no way England would drop Hales. He's been our best t20 player ever since he arrived on the scene for England. I'd play Lumb over Carberry as well. But looking at the squad I have a feeling all 3 will play.

Carberry made 20 for the Lions today against Bangladesh A by the way. Wright is smashing it everywhere he's on 62 off 31 with 11 overs left
