http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...rs-tired-formula-just-doesnt-add-anymore.html Well negotiated, Nicola. DTLW
Odd or even it hardly matters. A brilliant bit of negotiating by Cortese. Shame that the income will dry up for a few months.
The income isn't even relevant to me, it's just the fact that Cortese managed to totally dictate a ridiculous clause to a big club like that! I bet Cortese sits there with his stopwatch as AOC steps onto the pitch and fires up the fax machine to the Arsenal accounting department, bit of a hobby for him. Hilarious.
Even of it is true, surely this is only for the first X times? I can't imagine we'll still be getting this when he's in his 30s, it would add up to millions.
This is why Wenger has totally lost the plot. Refuses to put Chamberlain on the pitch because it costs 10K when the lad could win Arsenal games and helps them achieve 4th place and all the millions that come with it... That makes sense. Not like they're short of a few bob anyway! Has anyone else seen the below proof that Wenger can spend money? Hahaha.
Would have thought the 10K payments continue until a maximum is reached. Wasn't his price 12 mill + 3 mill (perhaps the 3 mill is made up of payments such as the 10K per 20 mins). If Wenger was doing what they say, I regard it as pretty daft to do team selection based on what (to Arsenal) is peanuts. An interesting part in the same article was about their Academy where people involved aren't talking to each other and the team got thrashed twice in preseason. No wonder he keeps wistfully looking at us...except we are not an easy touch anymore. Wenger himself said: We have a good academy...just not as good as Saints. He praised us particularly for our scouting and technical coaching. Nice try, Wenger, but you are still not getting Shaw.
It's probably not about the money for Wenger, he's just incredibly stubborn and tried to stop us getting the money cause we dealt on our terms in the deal.
The more I think about this the more unlikely it seems. I think they are just basing this on some perceived pattern of him playing for the last 20 minutes of games (which is a normal time for a substitute to come on). And how do you explain all the times he's started games?
If anything sums up how poorly Arsenal are conducting business then this does. And may I add... good. I wonder how Chamberlain feels about it? He maybe casting jealous glances towards the South Coast right now. I bet Cortese is still laughing about that clause. I wonder if there are any other daft ones in there?.... £2,000 everytime Chamberlain wears shorts. £1,500 everytime Chamberlain uses more than 3 sheets of toilet paper. £18,000 everytime Chamberlain puts on stupid sized headphones.
If he's starting games, then fine, they're not going to avoid starting him just to save 10k. Seems to me like it's a pretty standard pay-per-appearance fee, just with 20 minutes as the minimum playing time to qualify the payment.
It just seems so pointless, they will have to pay this money sooner or later anyway, and the idea that a club with £140m-odd in spare cash is going to tell its manager to delay bringing him on for a few more minutes to save £10k is pretty crazy. People seem to find it funny to laugh at Wenger, and fair enough, but I think people like to assume things like this about him are true because they want it to be. I don't believe for a second that he's this daft, especially based solely on a few lines in a story about something else. I mean, this is so sensational, don't you think they would have made the whole article about this if they had any evidence for it?
There's a hint in there somewhere... Some sort of appearance fee is somewhat believable, but that it affects team selection isn't really unless a club is in serious financial difficulties.
£15m was too much for Chamberlain, Bale and Walcott cost a third less and were in a tougher division. Not that I'm complaining; Chamberlain would have been a lot better if he had a season in the Championship with us and maybe even one in the PL. I think it's 10k leading up to the £3m in installments, so he has to play 20 minutes+ 300 times to get the full £3m in additions.
