Pretty much as the title suggests really.

He simply has to start for me and there are a few reasons for this. Firstly Pardew has already stated he should be making at least ten first team starts this season,so for me give him it against a top side where expectations are low.

Secondly he should start because we don't want to enter the first game of the season with players out of position (MYM at left back) and thirdly because Navas loves to attack by going on the outside of the full back. MYM would try to tackle him with his right foot which is two bookings waiting to happen when up against someone with the speed of Navas.

Now I know some will say if he gets roasted by Navas his confidence will be fragile, but if we aren't going to play him when our two first choice left backs are injured (santon & haidara) when are we going to give the lad a chance??? And if he does got roasted and have a shocker then big deal, Villa got pumped 8-0 at Chelsea (one of many games where they got smashed) last year and then look at their young team yesterday, surely he'd benefit long term even if he did suffer a crisis of confidence short term.

Of course I fully expect Pardew to play MYM at left back though because if he didn't he'd have to drop one of Saylor or MYM and I don't think he's brave enough to do that. He'll take the easy option and pick the established lads for all the wrong reasons.

Hope I'm eating humble pie (regarding the last paragraph) when the line up is announced at 7pm tomorrow though.

Dummett has great potential, he's looked good in pre season games, but it's far too early to start him tomorrow. It'll do no good for his confidence if/when he gets tortured against seasoned pro's.

Maybe next year, he looks good.

I'd agree re starting him - he's looked good pre season and regarding the confidence thing - if he does get a roasting and can't cope with it then he'll never cope (this year, next year, whenever) and isn't the player we need.

Let's be honest few of us are expecting anything, so in reality he's on a hiding to nothing

If he's good, enough then he should play - whatever experience he gains should make him a stronger player.

But look at Villa, youngest squad in the league etc and they put in a performance like yesterday's. I know it's only one game but Dummett is 21 not 18.

We played players out of position all year last year and it was a disaster. I just don't see why we should in the first game when we have a specialist left back available.

I mean look at Luke Shaw at Southampton, do you see their fans saying don't pick him against the top teams? Of course not and he's only 17...Pardew should make the brave decision for me tomorrow.

MYM at left back for me. I like the look of Dummett, but not in the first game.

Mbiwa for me too, Walcott didn't have a sniff and MYM was great going forward too.

Talk about chucking him in the deep end. Morecambe away is a great place for him to start, not tonihht. Mbiwa is a great choice for lb tonight.

I'd play Mbiwa LB and put Saylor and Colo CB.

Sorry but I think City is just too big of a game for him. If we get hammered, it wont be good for his confidence. City has a host of attacking mids that can also play as wingers and they'll likely rotate.

Just wrapping him up in cotton wool by not playing him in my opinion.

It's all well and good saying it won't be good for his confidence if we get hammered, on the flip side he if plays and we get a result his confidence will go through the roof.

Also the fact that he won't get a game when our two first choice left backs are injured is hardly going to fill the lad with confidence. Dummett offers a better attacking threat than Mbiwa too, we're going to need to score to register at least a point because I can't see us keeping a clean sheet.

    I would start with him.

He has to start somewhere, so why not tonight.
The only way we will find what he's about is if he plays and doesn't fester away sitting on his backside.
If he doesn't play when Santon and Haidara are both out, when will he play?

To say, it would kill his confidence may be fair enough, but, vice versa, a good game would do wonders for him.

Should play for me , we have to get away from this round pegs, square holes scenario. Baptism of fire but I'm not convinced by MYM at left back. Looks uncomfortable.

The only outfield player to leave tonight with any credibility, barring some brief glimpses by HBA

He looked decent and should have started.

If Santon isn't fit for West Ham, he has to start.
In fact I would be tempted even if Santon is fit.

Liked the look of Dummett. Good thing is we get to see MYM and Colo get a run. Tayls was shocking and bottled it yet again. Makes a mockery of the "too many French" stuff. I actually think we do need more English players, but not with his mentality.

If Santon is fit I'd go with him at right back and Dummett on the left. Debuchy was pathetic.

    Can't argue with that.

Debuchy is a liability with a poor temperament not suited to English football.
    Sending off waiting to happen.
