When I imagine Roy Hodgson looking at players, he is stooped over, hands in pockets with a clearly visible trickle of spittle coming from the corner of his mouth.
I always imagined him to be reading the newspaper, seeing some results from The Prem, thinking, "He's scored a few goals" and then calling up Stuart Pierce to ask his that player is English. That's the only way I would have thought he scouted Le Fondre, anyway. There was dribble, also.
Considering he was playing on the wing, it would be pretty surprising if he did scream "goal threat". Nonetheless he did score and he as you allude to, contributed a lot besides going in both directions. If you want to dismiss that as "working hard", ok, though I've never personally known that to be a bad characteristic.
I've been pretty much anti-Wellbeck since he scored a goal against us in some cup competition or other a few years ago (League1, maybe?). But I wouldn't talk about him in the same vain as Heskey. Emily was a total donkey who fell over all the time, and never scored. Wellbeck has pace and isn't a bad finisher.
The FA Cup in 2008/9 I believe that was. Think it was the same game that Matt Patterson got sent off. That was the first day I realised that Southampton were ****ed
Oh how I remember the threads on the old 606 forum with fans utterly convinced that Matt Paterson was a great prospect. Now at Aldershot.
+1 for Lallana. Wellbeck was OK on wednesday but doesn't do much for United. Lallana had a crap season but it was better than Wellbecks. (Ignoring the Real Madrid game there in which he did play very well)
I notice Schneiderlin has yet to get a call-up for the French 1st team, he's been playing in England for a number of years now and, whilst I don't see him wanting to play for England over France, he could probably apply for citizenship making him eligible to play. Do people think he'd get into and fit into the England team if so? (Anyone remember Almunia being linked with an England call-up many years ago?)
He could take up citizenship, but he would ineligible for England, for a number of reasons. He won some youth caps for France before he held a British passport, meaning he can't play for the England national team. And even if he hadn't, the home nations have an agreement between each other and FIFA that foreign nationals could only play for the home nations if they had been educated in the country for five years before the age of 18. It's the same reason why Mikel Arteta couldn't play for England, or Angel Rangel for Wales.
Schneiderlin laughed off the comments from the press about perhaps seeking an England call up, he said he would never be interested.
