There's an interesting article in this months FourFourTwo about the 1946/7 season - the first official FA endorsed football season after WWII It's well worth a read - it talks about how some pre-War players who carried on were subjected to 'periodic hostility' as they played in the War time games (Raich Carter was booed at Roker Park and joined the RAF as a result) On the restart of the season in August 1946 every squad was pretty much a brand new start - the Liverpool team featured 20 new faces, some of which had been drafted in from trials advertised in the local press. As a result it was a weird season - Man Utd and Liverpool were championship contenders despite being pre-War strugglers And on the first round of games, 944,000 people attended the 43 matches! Anyway... It says that due to the 'poor quality of Leather' in post-War UK, match balls were often difficult to source - both match balls in the 1946 and 1947 Cup Finals (OBVIOUSLY FEATURING Charlton) actually burst in play! Now... Is this a record?! In all Cup Finals that Charlton have played in the Ball has burst. I know it's not why but I think that would be a great story if that is how the Dagger crest developed...
I think it is a record as am sure it was a Question when a Charlton fan chose the club as a subject on Mastermind once
