Did not hear much of them in the Rous Stand, was expecting constant, loud output but seemed pretty much as previous season
Ok where in the Rous? Because I know people on the halfway line who heard us, I know at least 2 players heard us, and I know plenty of others have done too. I am the first to admit that it wasnt perfect, but it was the first game trying to co-ordinate nearly 500 people into one voice. As time goes by im sure the noise will spread.
When will people learn/accept/understand that we will never be loud at home!! We could be beating Real Madrid at home and we still wouldn't be loud. It's nothing to be ashamed off, we are a family club with a high percentage of ' older ' fans and kids.
There was that period after their equaliser when the whole stand was quiet, which I think is when people expected the new group to be getting everyone else going. It's easy to be singing when winning, but it's when the team isn't doing so well that the crowd and players need the lift. I was on the right hand side or the rookery and couldn't particularly hear the group over people in the middle or near me Not having a go at it is still early days and its a very good idea which will Strengthen. Rome wasn't built in a day... But there were times I thought the rookery was very loud
Thanks Kev, yeah it was quiet when the equalised. Its something we will work on. As you say Rome wasnt built in a day. Plus its the first time the 460 odd of us have been together. Hopefully as we move forward we will improve.
Mitch, I'd only agree with some of that. We are capable of generating some atmosphere, but not very often. I thought the atmosphere was pretty good for the first 15 minutes or so yesterday, but we do go quiet when things are not going to plan (when we are most needed ironically). I for one applaud the work of the 1881 section and Rome wasn't built in a day. So stick at it Dan.
I thought you guys did a great job! I sit in the UR towards that end. The difficulty comes because you are probably in a long 'strip' as opposed to a tight block. That probably can't change unless the club start evicting people from their seats which is highly unlikely to happen. The songs will catch on. WE SING FOR WATFORD, though not particularly loud, was catching on. Many in the UR were clapping along during the middle section. Some of us were trying to join in. Didn't hear 'Yellow' though, which was a pity. As one footballing sage put it... "early doors..."
Thank you Fez. I am hoping the who do we sing for one does kick off. Mainly to save my voice. It requires half the group to call "who do we sing for" and the other half to respond "we sing for Watford". Yellow didnt make an outing as we want to ease people into it, we dont want to make things too hard too early,
It seemed like the usual fare - singing when we were on top and winning but pretty quiet when we were under pressure. Not sure much will change straight away but a strong run of home form will help plus encouragement from the 1881 guys (so long as its clean..) Trouble is away fans sit next to the Family end where there isn't going to be much noise so they will criticise every game.
I must admit when I come to the Forest game, I'm looking forward to seeing this for myself and hope it comes across well on Sky. The true test of The1881 will be during a scrappy game on a cold, wet Tuesday night.
Good job we haven't got many. The ones we do are away to Doncaster, Blackburn and Burnley! We'd be lucky to get 1k to those games altogether.
New member here, usually only post on the 'main' Watford one but thought I should branch out a little. The 1881 only came about weeks ago, supporters who moved (me and my kids included) don't know each other so these things will take a little time to get going but for a first effort it was good with lots of room for improvement. It has a lot going against it (location, poor acoustics, generally apathetic fans) but it will get better and lessons learnt along the way. No illusion it's never going to be an amazing wall of sound but honestly it's a little baffling how, in potentially our most exciting period in history, we are mostly silent bar the goals!. Not a dig at anyone, I hope ALL the supporters get motivated to get behind the team vocally not just for the team (or to outsing the opposition) but for themselves too.
Welcome to not606 Kismet. Your views will always be welcome. I agree with you bar one thing. I don't think that Watford fans are "generally apathetic". To my mind there are the ones who are able to go to quite a few, even a lot, of away games and because of being with a large group there is often a great spirit and atmosphere between them. In a sense for them it is a case of stepping into the lions den, not just Millwall, and making sure that they stick together and let the home fans know that they are there. At the Vic the majority are ones who are comfortable to be there, know what to expect from their surroundings and do not need to create an impression. When the team is not having things all their own way is probably the time that they need maximum support, but it is natural for people to get worried at such times and contemplate what they would do to change things around. I doubt that I have been to many matches over the years that have had 100% excitement for 90 minutes, so there will be lulls in the noise levels, even if only to allow the most vocal chance to catch their breath. I don't think this should be taken as a sign of apathy.
Cheers for the welcome oldfrenchhorn! I should have qualified my comment - I count myself in that apathetic group. Probably didn't phrase it well but there have been some games over the years (usually night time cup games come to mind) where the atmosphere has been pretty good but too many times it's terrible and whilst that was understandable for most of the miserable last x years as you mentioned but at the moment we're in an almost surreal period but still most of the supporters just spectate rather than suppport? Definitely better at away games though and I think it'll get better at home too this season, just take some time to get our mindset changed to one where singing/chanting etc. is the norm rather than the exception! Again, not a dig at our supporters as everyone is different but GFZ, the players and the club are fully behind the effort to improve things so we should be too and hopefully once the new stand is built not only will it help keep the sound in but also hopefully 1881 + others can be moved to a 'better' location...
I also think that it will be better when the East Stand is up and running, although I don't hold out too much hope that it will improve the acoustics greatly. What I do think it will do though is bounce support back and forth from one side of the ground to the other. There is no response that I have noticed from the advertising boards.
Have to confess to being a bit of a hypocrite myself. I like the noise generated by a crowd of excited fans but am not vocal at matches myself. I will applaud politely and say encouraging things like "well done that man" or "that referee chappy is a bounder" - does not really help the atmosphere though. However I would not describe myself as apathetic - more like somebody who enjoys the theatre.
Yeah, damn those silent advertising boards. Hopefully when the new stand is built some thought will be given to making it as 'noisy' as possible (low/dipped roofing, non-absorbent walls etc.) and, although this is unlikely but would be great, a safe standing area near the away fan's section would be brilliant. HarryHornet - are you sure you're in the right century I've been guilty of that myself but lately I've changed back to trying to be like I was when I first started going no doubt inspired by what's happening ON the pitch.
