Anyone play for a team in it? Apparently it used to be the biggest local Sunday league in Europe? Not even the biggest in England anymore I don't think but we just set up a team for this upcoming season, we're in the Wyke 5th division, should be a good laugh. Although I'm told the team we replaced were kicked out for battery and assault on a referee, which is tad alarming but apparently that's not a regular occurrence and they've been given a life-time ban now. Just wondering if anyone on here plays for a team and if so, who? Or even if anyone fancies playing you can PM me.
Yes I play for AS Tigers. We were in Wyke 6 last year. We have been put in Myton 4 this year. There was a team in our league last year that got kicked out for assaulting a ref. They were called drum reserves. They were a right team of thugs.
Haha, that's them, Drum FC, every manager I've spoken to has said they were thugs. We've got Silver Cod third game, wonder if they'll be a bit dirty too.
Yes they were. One of their players stamped on my ankle. I kicked off at the ref and got the free kick. The stood there and called me a ***. I then pullex down my sock to reveal 2 stood marks and blood pouring down my ankle. We lost the game by one goal after the ref disallowed one of our goals and gave them a 2 pens. He was intimidated by them and their sideline. Came over after the game and apologised. We told him to get stuffed. What team are you playing for?
To be fair, I feel sorry for the refs in situations like that. They're getting what, £15-20, it's not worth it for them to get battered by a bunch of muppets, and when you look at what happened to the ref that got assaulted you can understand ref's being reluctant to argue. I can't believe anyone's willing to do it, must be a **** job. We're the mighty, newly-formed North Cave Cobras. Wyke 5th and already qualified for the Halfords Cup as we got a bye for the preliminary round.
Yes I couldn't do it. We have got swallow in the cup. Hoping to get promoted this year. Signed a few good players. There seems to be alot of new teams in our league.
played yonks ago when there were 19 (yes 19) divisions with 12 teams in each, we worked our way up to league two before age & injuries caught up with us. Drum were a decent team/club in the top division in those days, won it a few times I believe. I called a ref a f***ing w***er once & got a 10 game ban! (& £10 fine in old money) Ahh, them were t'days...jumpers for goalposts etc
Fair, think Orchard Park might do quite well in your league, we played some of them (half them, half Cott) in a friendly and got battered, although tbf, only about 4/5 of our starting XI played., probably would have been quite even had we had a full team. You seen the state of their pitch though? The goals are on a 45 degree angle and the pitch is covered in dog ****, hope we don't get them in the cup. Yeah, well they've cut the divisions down quite a lot from Wyke 6 and Myton 6, to only Myton 4 and Wyke 5th.
Seems very harsh, seems pretty difficult to get sent-off these days, although many still manage it ...
A red still gets you a £10 fine and a yellow a £5 fine, at least it did for the vets a year ago. Though I've retired now, so I bet their income has dropped considerably.
Yes apparently orchard park used to be Cott. Was it on Cooper? Should be good as I know a few people at two or three of the teams in the league. Think there is 1 or 2 teams in your league who was in ours last year.
Yeah it was, I'd ask them to make it a 'fece-free' zone if we ever played them again. If you were in Wyke 6th, we'll be playing most of the teams in your league last year I reckon, with a few from Wyke 5th. Any we should look out for?
I have just had a look. There is only 3 teams in your league who was in ours last year. Blackburn c, north newbald and marist reserves. Nothing to shout about. Clarendon are a good side. They beat us 2 weeks ago. I used to play with a few of their players a couple of years ago.
Fair enough, we beat Newbald couple of weeks back, but they finished second bottom so perhaps not the best guide. We've got them 5th game at home, should win, we're making North Cave Playing Fields something of a fortress.
Ha div 5 brings back memorys of helping my mates team out in the old div 19, ah the smell of stale ale coming from the kid thats marking you as he's telling you what he's going to do to ya (once he can see straight) when you next go round him, but thats nothing compared to what piss heads were going to do to you when you pulled up in the car park at 10:00. Ahhh stonebridge always the worse ha, i carnt believe refs still do it id want a fortune to ref one of them games not just cos of the **** you get but cos id have to watch the ****e, the standards not good these days. All the young ones want to stay in and play fifa thats why the leagues shrunk
Our side's average age is pretty young, we've got a kid who used to be in the Atletico Madrid academy, think he's in for a shock.
What's your team? I played a match last week for Highway who are in your league. Don't know if I'll be signing up yet though. I also know a lad who plays for Hastings FC in that division as well. As for refereeing, I play 5-a-side at Goals and people even kick off at the ref there, where there's very little room for them to get anything wrong. There's some psychos playing football around here.
Nah, we've got a pretty thin squad and most of our lads are away, sorry. Orchard Park United asked us for one on twitter though so they might be free?
