View attachment 25208 vs Preview After the disappointment of an opening day defeat at Bournemouth, Charlton face the obligatory early-exit to a lower league team in the first round of the league cup. Oxford will indeed be on a high, having dispatched Portsmouth 4-1 on Saturday and will have us in their sights as a second former-premier league scalp in a row. However, with rotation looking likely and a crop of exciting youngsters on the fringes of the first team squad, we could see a new starting 11 of players determined to force their way into the team. Last 5 Bournemouth 2 - 1 Charlton (C) ----- Portsmouth 1 - 4 Oxford (L2) Team News Chris Powell could look to combine youth and experience and field some stars of the u-21 development squad that did so well last season. In my opinion it should be all change to give the fringe players a proper shout of stepping up. Starting Line-Up & Result (Prediction) Pope Wilson Cort Wood Evina Green Hollands Stephens Cook Church Piggot Subs: Hamer, Feely, Morrison, Hughes, Cousins, Sho-Silva, Kermogant 2-2(P) Win - Usual cup nonsense. Squeeze through on penalties after Yann drags us back in it.
Thanks, JA. I seem to remember Oxford knocking us out of the Cup when we were in the Premier League and they were in Div. 4 or whatever it was called then. I've no idea what team The Doctor will put out, this would be mine: Pope: Solly;Morro;Wood;Wiggins; Wilson;Poyet;Cousins;Evina; Yann;Pigott. a blend of our best players and our best young players, the young players who are good enough to make a case for first-team involvement. It might be a mistake to play Kermit in 2 games a week but I want us to win, and he can come off as soon as we get a 2-goal lead.
I personally think Danny Green has to start - otherwise it's pretty much his CAFC career over I would also protect Solly from scouts by not playing him at all! Great post JA!
Have to agree - hopefully a game where he can build some confidence from too. But other than that, I think FHB has it near enough correct. Though two youngsters in centre midfield against some bruising League Two midfielders might not be the most sensible.
Protecting Solly is a good idea, but lets make him cup tied I'd rather not play him though, and we'll win tonight, we never win a cup game if I'm there (would really think hard about a trip to wembley) and seeing i'm not there we'll win COYR!
Poyet and Cousins are quite robust characters. Poyet in particular has added quite a physical side to his game in the last year! I realise there's no chance at all of him playing though. Realistically we are in the same position as every year- lots of experienced players who need to get a game, so the team will be more like: Pope; Wilson;Cort;Wood; Evina; Green;Hollands; Stephens;Cook; Church;Sordell.
Pope Wilson Cort Wood Fox Green Hollands Poyet Evina Sordell Piggot Going for a 1-1 and a win on pens for CAFC !
Much against my better judgement I'm going but only cos I've been at meetings in London and have a train home via Charlton. Trains are screwed up so might kept the gate down even more. Will be surprised if there are more than 5k there. Ah well, good excuse to eat fish and chips and have a sinful lager.
Wotcha Bill. My sinful pleasures are few and far between these days so I'm gonna enjoy. Do you reckon Killie and charlton for a Relegation double this year?
This would be my team (assuming all 100% fit). But not expecting CP to field anything remotely similar. Pope Wilson, Cort, Wood, Evina Cousins, Holland, Poyet Kermorgant (playing a bit deeper) Pigott, Sordell I hate to burden Kermit with an extra game, but I would want to give that front three a try as I think they are our best hope until we sign a proper experienced CF or Church makes a great leap forward. Unfair to try Pigott without Kermit behind him. Subs: Hamer, Solly, Morrison, Fox, Hughes if fit otherwise Gower, Church, Harriott. Hoping Kermorgant can come off after an hour with the job done, and Poyet will presumably need resting too. As this team has never played together, I have no great confidence we would get through, but I think they have as much chance as our First Team mincing about trying to avoid injury. I count ten players there with something to prove, plus Kermit, who would never give less than 100%
I'm relying on the Jam Tarts to save Killie's bacon. I'm going to-night, but will have to miss our first 2 home league games, so don't know about Charlton. Just leaving.
CONFIRMED TEAM............ Charlton: Hamer; Evina, Cort, Wood, Wilson; Cook, Hollands, Stephens, Green; Church, Pigott. Subs: Pope, Dervite, Sordell, Harriott, Kermorgant, Cousins, Jordan. Brilliant to see the pig start !!! FEED THE PIG AND HE WILL SCORE!!
Yee-hah! I want to see Danny Green pinging over ball after ball right on to his head and Stevens and Hollands sliding pinpoint passes through the defence for Church to caress into the net. There's an awful lot of things I want - I'll just go off and make a wish list...
He would with Kermit behind him. If he fails in front of Green, Stephens and Cook, what does it prove? I left them out of my selection. All a waste of space. And alongside Church won't help either. No first choice players to start (apart from Hamer). Well, at least that is consistent and I can respect CP's decision there. Better than the dreaded "half-and-half".
Wonderful player. Always believed in him. So-called "commentary" on Player has sunk to a new low tonight.
