Summer 2013 Transfer Rumour Thread - Mk4

I had a dream last night that we signed Shane Long, this is getting ridiculous!

 

This should probably be merged with the rumour thread.

 

What I want to know is WHY we haven't made a bid for that awesome player that is Stuart Downing going for a steal at £5million! He'd have us in Champions League. Hang on, hang on, I haven't taken my pills this morning.

Although saying that I would make a cheeky little bid for Defoe. Think he could be got at a decent price. He knows the league, knows where the goal is. Would play well of the likes of Lambert. He might be 30 but still.

 

He also said he'd consider offers if there were any. Basically you can boil what he said down to "I want to continue being a footballer".

 

Played for Pompey. I'm not sure how the fans would react. He's probably earning a lot too.

 

If Downing had the right club, and the right system, he could well be a damn good player.

 

The trouble with the older but still talented player is not the price, but their wage. They also don't fit into The Plan.

 

Yes we may have finished 14th, but we were only five points off Swansea in ninth and seven points off eighth placed West Brom, who beat us twice, and that was after a terrible first ten games and a dip in form at the end. If we make a better start than we did last season, I don't see why top ten isn't possible. If we can get a striker in to help take more of those chances we create, we could easily get 8th-11th.

 

Unless someone wants to start a pure fantasy thread.

Although opposition players who played for Pompey get jeered, I cannot imagine a Saints player with such a history would be. Perhaps they would be scrutinised a bit more closely, until we were sure they had lost all their bad habits and become a good footballer

 

Agree about the Pompey link but my problem with Defoe is his very poor injury record.

 

Defoe according to a few newspapers is on £60k after tax.

 

Couldn't care less about the Pompey thing, but as Lamb says, he's prone to injury and is likely on a hefty wage. I'm also not sure he fits into our preferred system - I don't see him as a winger coming in to join attack, and he's not the pivot point central striker we like to employ.

 

I could get it off and running with Fierro if you'd like.

 

He got a really bad reception from us both at St Mary's and White Hart Lane too.

 

But that was when he was playing against us... How many "Oh XXXX, he used to be a skate but he's all right now" have we had?

 

A good friend of mine is a West Ham fanatic and he reckons Defoe is really bad news in the dressing room, think he referred to him a Bertie big Bollocks.

 

Main problem with Defoe is earrings - how can you have a professional footballer with big diamonds in his lugs ?. That just isn`t the Saints way. Blouse.

 

I've got an "if" to add to your right club and right system..... "If" he was any good
