Lots of debate about the merits or otherwise of recruiting 'foreigners'. If the club decided to cease recruiting overseas players and concentrated on British lads, would you support this strategy if it meant the progress of the club was put on hold for two seasons?
If there had been a "Don't know" option I would have plumped for that. I voted No as opposed to Yes only for this reason: I can see benefits in developing a sound rump of British/Irish lads but I would not be in favour of imposing anything that might restrict the club from bringing in the best for any given position. Having said that, I would much rather have, say, 7 home grown 1st teamers. I think the Arsenal approach to foreign players is OTT and I would not want SAFC to emulate that.
My answer has to be no. I would not be happy at all, to discover that SB had unearthed another south american gem who was eventually spotted and signed by another club, because we had a policy of only recruiting British Isles players. The next Messi or Ronaldo is out there somewhere!
he may be British ^^ Thing is, Wenger I think has played it clever, most are young, 16 and younger when he brings them over, he wont get a work permit but as he is playing them in youth leagues i dont think it matters, then in 5 years when they are 19-21, they become British Citizens, so dont need a work permit, and then he can start playing them regular, and they wont count to the 25 man squad either (i dont think anyway) as they are joint citizonship with Britain and whoever else.
Agree with this. I would love to see us have a team of 11 British players with some of them from up here but realistically it's not going to happen. I still prefer to see a English bias within teams and us and the mags both have exactly that with a few foreign flair players thrown into the mix.
Voted no, want to see our team have the best, would love us to play like Barca, but with only uk players we would be more ****e than we already are.
i'll vote yes to an extent. really want to emulate the liverpool of old - lets say 75-80% home nation players with the rest being foreigners that can add that bit of difference and can fit in well
It would mean the demise of the Premiership for the sake of the England national team, which will probably still be ****e regardless. No thanks.
I can see some merits with this train of thought, but I firmly believe that transfers should be made on ability and not just nationality.
