Good for them! You wouldn't see a crowd even half that size at the KC if we went down to league two

    You're not wrong.

It was always in double figures last time we were there.

    Typical bullshit as always.

The REAL record attendance in L2 was just under 24,000 when City played Huddersfield in 2004.

In 2003/4 it was Div 3. 2004/5 was the first year of L2 and we'd been promoted already.

What a ridiculous "record attendance" though that they are trying to establish. There may have even been bigger crowds when it was Div 4 in the 70s.

Yeah pointed this bullshit made up record in the championship thread.

Can't be bothered to look it up, but I'm sure I saw somewhere the real 4th tier record is something like 36,000 at Palace.

Slightly unrelated, but isn't the record for a 3rd division match something like 49,000?

I think it was Aston Villa vs Bournemouth.

You're not wrong - in 1961 Crystal Palace v Millwall in the 4th Division had an attendance of 37,774. A world record 4th tier attendance until Rangers broke it last season.

How many times did we get bigger crowds than Pompey's in the bottom division? id say at least 5.

And whenever people claim world records like this i refuse to believe it. Are you telling me someone has gone through every country that plays football and checked the record attendance for their 4th tier? I'm pretty sure Fiorentina were selling out 45,000 when they had to reform in lower than the 4th tier.

I talked to some Pompey supporters in a pub as they were making their way home. They weren't happy. Apparently they just folded once Oxford scored and it could of been more. I think they are in for a long hard season. There was a great amount of expectancy before the game with the fans buoyant about winning the league. The bubble certainly burst in Pompey on Saturday.

37774 is the number you were thinking of. I did look it up.

I think some of you are missing the point; it's the record attendance since the Football League was rebranded.

Fair play to the Portsmouth fans, it shows a great commitment to their club and if they can maintain it all season then they'll at least make a bit of money.

A quick bit of research threw up the following list for the top attendance at each level of the pyramid:

    Level 1 - 83,260 - Manchester United vs. Arsenal, Division 1, 17/1/1948
    Level 2 - 70,305 - Tottenham Hotspur vs. Southampton, Division 2, 25/2/1950
    Level 3 - 51,621 - Cardiff City vs. Bristol City, Division 3 South, 7/4/1947
    Level 4 - 37,774 - Crystal Palace vs. Millwall, Division 4, 31/3/1961
Level 5 - 11,574 - Cambridge City vs Cambridge United, Southern League, 4/4/1963
Level 6 - 8,007 - Yeovil Town vs. Enfield, Isthmian League Premier Division, 25/3/1997
Level 7 - 4,289 - Aldershot Town vs. Berkhamsted Town, Isthmian League Division 1, 2/5/1998
Level 8 - 4,097 - Dartford v Horsham YMCA, Ishtmian League First Divison South, 11/11/2006
Level 9 - 4,560 - AFC Wimbledon vs. Raynes Park Vale, Combined Counties League Premier Division, 5/5/2003
Level 10 - 6,023 - FC United of Manchester vs. Great Harwood Town, North West Counties League Division Two, 23/4/2006

And AFAIK, We (Hull City) hold the record for Division 3 North: 49655 vs Rotherham on Christmas Day, 1948.

Your third tier one doesn't count, as it was before there was a third tier national league, the actual third tier record is 49,309 at the Sheffield Wednesday v Sheffield United game on 26th December 1979(known as the Boxing Day Massacre - Wednesday won 4-0).

well alright then - so who holds the record for the NPower Championship? Do we havea record every time we change the sponsor and get that in the news? It should be done by tier only and this was the fourth tier. FACT.

Well it is isn't it? There's an attendance record for each tier. League 2 still is the 4th Tier, in case you hadn't noticed; they haven't added an extra league or anything. I don't know who holds the record attendance for the Championship, probably Newcastle when they were in it a few years ago.

We haven't rebranded though, have we? Changing a shirt style or getting a new sponsor isn't rebranding. That was, without a doubt, the worst example to back up an argument I've ever seen.

Thanks. I considered putting that match as an alternative for the post-unification of the 3rd tier. I took the highest at each tier/level, notwithstanding whether it was national or regional. I think it's a valid criterium.

I think the highest Championship attendance was 49,644, which was Newcastle v Boro.
