If you were asked to rewind the clock back to a pivital period, what would that be? Obviously most would say the Hull game, which kept us in the football league and they would be right, but for me equally important is the period after Kenny Jacket resigned as manager, and demands were being heard once again from the Jack army for on the deck football. It is exactly the style Swans fans always demand from their team, too. Have done through the reigns of Toshack, Frank Burrows, Jan Molby, John Hollins, Brian Flynn and others. It is why Swans fans never warmed to Kenny Jackett, he of the big punt approach. After Jacket's exit if you remember, you may recall that Dean Saunders, not Martinez, was red-hot favourite to replace Jackett as Swansea boss. We still don’t know the full truth of that one. What we do know is that Martinez was then afforded an interview in which he blew away the Swans’ board with his vision, knowledge and ambition to do the job. At the time Martinez was at Chester city, where he had gone on a free transfer, under Kenny Jacket, only to replace him as manager shortly after Jacket's exit. It's fair to say that Martinez appointment was mostly met positively from the fans, despite him not having any managerial experience, and from the moment he became Manager, the phylosophy and direction of the club, took on an all new perspective. Foundations laid by Roberto have been subsequently built upon by Paulo Sousa, and Brendan Rodgers, and finally Michael Laudrup, but it will always be for me the most important appointment in the history of Swansea City, that our board bought into the vision and continental style that Martinez sold that day in his interview, and as a supporter that remembers that time so vividly, I'm so glad that our board didn't go with Dean Saunders. The Swans had at last, really landed on their feet, being a debt-free, go-ahead club, playing at a fantastic new stadium with an excellent young manager at the helm, and those weeks after Kenny Jacketts exit, are for me a pivital period, that will last in my memory for a very long time to come.
Agree 100%. I was one of the posters calling for Jacket's head even though we weren't far away from being promoted. Just thought there was so much more potential if we concentrated on our strengths.
Agree terror, I was actually one too, sitting in the west stand right on top of the dug out, and I think we got to him in the end, shame he put all his eggs in the Trundle basket, and when Trundles goals dried up that October we kept dropping like a stone, until end of January when we signed Leon Knight and Rory Fallon, but then I think we had gone from the top of League 1 to 10th if my memory serves me correctly!................
I think the pivotal moment is now. We have faced a challenge and I think have passed it to attract talent. We have to hold onto our key talent, ie Michu, Dyer and Richards when the last minute panics come in from arsenal etc We have to balance our season for PL and cup campaigns, particularly if we could have a run in Europe. The board has to decide if we are really going to grow long term and this will mean, extending the stadium, sorting out the commercial side and promoting ourselves in Asia etc. Just have a feeling that in another few years, the events, decisions and fortunes of his season will become one of the most critical for Swansea
We have had so many! I just accept it now that we are a club will always get challenges we need to overcome although they are completely different now from the ones we faced in the 60s, 70s and 80s
there have been a series of pivotal points - some more critical than others - but each with a choice and each time the correct choice has been made, the trajectory reinforced and continued. The first one is probably the pound that bought the club salvation from utter destruction - that took a lot of courage and faith on the part of a few people. The fact that at each juncture the correct decision was made (or appears in hind sight to have been) is now bordering on a statistical miracle. Long may it continue. Better to be lucky than good, when you can be both it's brilliant.
The pivotal moment was the sacking of Brian Flynn. I believe that there's only been one season since then where we haven't achieved a higher league finish than in the one before.
