It's not illegal to offer an employee a zero hour contract, just unethical.

There are very few companies that take this little care of the people that work for them - that said, if you look at the recent bonus paid to Sports Direct Managers, there is a definite lack of fairness across Sports Direct employees.

Already had my say earlier on but I would just add.

This has nothing to with football or NUFC, the fact that Ashley is involved is relevant.
I don't think the OP was having a dig at NUFC, just posting something about MA that needed to be.

if you read the article, which happens to have been written by a well respected journalist for one of the more up market newspapers, not one of the red tops that sensationalises to sell more copies.

There is a lot of concern in general over the type of contracts, it just happens that Sports Direct is named in the article because that company is probably the worst exponent of its use in the UK and Ireland.

To have a workforce of 22,000 of which 20,000 are on such contracts is grossly disproportionate.

It's not just about working hours with SD, there is also a failure on the allowance of Holidays and Sick Pay.

As I said above, this is not about football and NUFC.

As I say change the law, take the ethical side out of it. Otherwise there is no issue. If you create a loophole, some greedy ****er will always jump through it. Look at how the tax laws are widely circumvented. Banking on some ethical well meaning is pie in the sky.

For me, that's the upsetting aspect.

I could never treat people like that who worked for me, more to the point, people who made me a massive amount of money.

I suppose my relatively low income when compared to someone like Mike Ashley, is exactly the reason I can look myself in the mirror each morning.

Ethical morality has to survive, otherwise you end up governed by soulless demons.

It's nice to be nice. <cool>

Which trusts are these? The NHS offer no clinical staff this sort of deal and I have not seen offers on our vacancy boards of this type for anybody (not that I've noticed anyway).

Post script - I found a sports direct bag in my garage earlier today - it went to the tip along with the rest of the rubbish. My garage is cleansed. :emoticon-0116-evilg

I suppose the comparison to be drawn here, is that Mike Ashley doesn't look after the 'little people'.

Playing devil's advocate, you could say that at Newcastle United, the 'little people' are the fans, so we shouldn't be surprised how we are treated by Ashley.

Sure we're screwed as far a being a 'fair society' goes; Thatcher and her bastard child Blair took us well and truly down the road of the 'me' culture and enabled the rich to get richer - but surely right thinking people should still condemn any act of exploitation of the weak by the strong? You might think there's nowt you can do about but no one has to condone it or make excuses for it.
