Di Canio keen to resolve Colback future after midfielder rejects new contract Sunderland boss Paolo Di Canio has urged Jack Colback to make a decision over his future after he rejected a new contract. The 23-year-old midfielder, who has a year remaining on his existing deal, has turned down the clubâs offer of an extension and his future remains uncertain less than three weeks before the start of the new Barclays Premier League season. Di Canio has been delighted with the academy graduateâs contribution during his time on Wearside, but having held discussions with the player, is keen for him to resolve the situation. Contract rebel: Jack Colback played a key role in Sunderland's pre-season tour but has rejected a new dea The Italian told the Sunderland Echo: 'Iâve already spoken to him twice and heâs done very well. 'He's a genuine guy with a fantastic attitude. Also, heâs got quality too. 'He has to make clear what he wants to do in the future because if one player has it in his brain to leave, it is difficult. 'But heâs got to keep going and keep behaving like he is. He doesnât look like heâs having any difficulties. Heâs one of the most positive young players we have got. Iâm very happy with him.' Future thinking: Sunderland boss Paolo Di Canio hopes Colback can play in an advanced role next season Colback has played much of his recent football for the Black Cats at left-back, and Di Canioâs search for a specialist this summer is ongoing. However, the manager wants his full-backs to adopt a more attacking approach next season and believes the Tynesider could be suited to the task. The Black Cats boss added: 'Now we are playing in a different way, heâs started to understand that as a left-back he becomes like a winger. 'With the system we are going to use this year, both full-backs often during the game will become wingers. Heâs going to enjoy it.'
is it not he's been offered £10 grand a week whilst most others are hitting the £30-40 grand a week?
if its money perhaps he deserves a pay increase , if he wants to spread his wings , goodbye and the best of luck
Never really been the biggest colback fan, however late last season he earned his spurs for me, if he is on a poor paid (footballers relevant) then give him a hefty hike, much lessers players on higher wages I guess, bardo, Vaughan, injury prone catts, to name but three ??? Until we have a proper lb and cover he cannot leave, have we ever learned, bent, Guyana, Campbell etc etc
If he's on the last year of his contract, stick him in the reserves come January, as we should have a LB lined up by then. No point in letting him keep his profile up if he's going to walk for free. You'd think he'd sign a one year extension, just so the club get a fee for him. Granted, we should pay him what he's worth, but this smacks of big-headedness a bit. He's a definite trier, but I've never been totally convinced by him.
With 13th on this. Give the lad a pay rise if he is on, say, £10k. He has done well at lb. Like PDC's bait to him as well - forward running defenders. Give your head a shake, Colback. Really want a move to Norwich / Hull / Stoke? Stick in. make left back yours. x
Aye let's give a ginga on only 10k a pay rise...... The worlds gone mad, well certainly the footy world has... Put him out to pasture, and have naked ginga fun with Prince Harry
One of the most underrated players in the team. I think he has come on leaps and bounds last season and would be gutted to see him leave.
He need to be on a wage in line with the other squad players, he is decent and it would be good to keep him but no player is bigger than the club. Our problem is he is our best LB on the books currently.
He's rejected the first contract offer, there will be a second if he rejects that then **** him off. A decent enough squad player but, not indispensable.
The thing is if you were doing a job and had been loyal to the company all your working life, then everyone else around you was doing the same job and getting paid more, you would be a little pissed off too.
Agree with vegus,we must give Jack a contract in-line with the rest of the squad. He has come thro' our ranks, but this should not stop us giving the lad a true valuable contract. We,as fans, don't know what he has been offered, but I hope we offer him a good deal.Loyalty should be rewarded! Would not like to see Jack leave.
I like Jack and he wouldn't be high on my list to sell but he is going to struggle to hold down a regular place so if he wont sign a contract he has to be sidelined to allow players who have bought into the programme. He is a decent player but I fail to see which club he thinks is going to line his pockets to the tune of "30k a week, cos he aint top 10 material imo. Like him to stay but will get over him leaving as well, especially if we sign Fernandes?
Im one of Jacks harshest critics and really didnt rate him as a centre midfielder. However, under Di Canio and as a left back ive absolutely adored him and ate a massive slice of humble pie. As cover at left back i would keep him no doubt, however he hasnt got a cat in hells chance of making it as a CM if we are letting the likes of N Diaye, Catts, etc go, and is well down the list for me personally of what we already have in the middle. After his loan spell at Ipswich im sure there was a piece on skysports that said he was looking to leave back then if he wasnt guarenteed first team footy in cm. Me personally, i think he should adopt Gardners attitude of just being happy to being on the pitch. He gets enough money to adapt to where ever the team wants/needs him.
I will be shouting for him if he's playing against Fulham and what he earns that week, I do hope the fcuker comes and shouts for me when I'm picking Lollie's ****e up in a pad off the bed for £58 a week careers allowance. As a pro photographer I earned buckets but for my pittance each week to see Lollie's face when her arse is cleaned is worth a lot more than stature, money and assets. I will die with nowt but I will die knowing I really loved for once in my life. You cannot price that love and devotion, it will kill me but I'm here for the lass, no fcuker else is..
I like Jack a lot and he seems like a good honest lad, so I can't imagine he'll be kicking off demanding £40k a week. Maybe we've offered him a small increase and he wants a bit more, and that's probably fair enough. He should be earning similar to other squad players/1st team players. I'm sure Jack would understand that he won't get 30/40k because the players that we do have on that sort of money (Catts, Bardo, Bramble etc...) we've tried to shift, and replace with players on a bit less, or who are a step up in quality. I like that PDC definitely wants to keep him, and I think he'll stay. I do agree with Sid though - Jack should sign a contract extension so that the club gets a fee, even if he's not staying past this season.
Commachio1 giz a break, it's not about what we earn, yeh they earn a lot of money but if every Tom dick and Harry earns more than you (if that's the case) your gonna feel hard done by. How much had the likes of Titus, killgallon, Vaughan, so on and on been on, I do think he is gonna be a squad player but better than the three I've just. Mentioned and just cos he came thought the ranks don't mean he's to be paid as a FOOTBALL yts. Yeh the amounts are obscene but it is what it is and beyond our comprehension. No doubt I like you would play for £100s a week if you and i had the ability. I run my social club for nothing cos it's struggling but were not all made the same??
