    Owen,

I love it when the smoke clears and the truth emerges..........

Not only did he £130,000 a week ( probably the highest paid dud in the Premier League at the time), he turned down £140,000 for a year ( £7 million !!!) extension. We're we mad or what........Keegan should look at our current policy of quality younger cheaper players and hang his head in shame.

Owen should have kept his very mean and spiteful thoughts to himself. We all thought he was milking it...........but now we know the truth.

He's a horrible little runt I thoroughly hope he breaks both legs whilst he gets his annual Carling Cup run out with Fergies 3rd team.

Sorry but the club is responsible for contracts not the manager. Derek throwing Keegans name in there is a bit laughable to be honest. I wouldn't trust the slimy toad. So that's just more smoke being throwing in the air. He was right to have a go though because ofthe money earned whilst here.

Whereas I probably differ from a lot of people on Owen, I think his Twitter comments were wholly inappropriate given the money he earnt whilst here. He should have just kept his own council. At the end of day Freddie Shepherd is responsible for the Owen debacle. He was injury prone before we signed him, then we whinge about it? We whinge about him trying to get fit for England when we'd all do the same? Even the clueless Souness told Shepherd not to sign Owen but he wanted to be the fans hero by getting the very best. That's all well and good if you can get him on the pitch. We got exactly what I expected out of Owen. He has never been the kind of striker to bust a gut running after dead losses. He has always disappeared in games and just popped up when it mattered. He underperformed in the last year here due to the fans cranking up the pressure when it became clear we were in trouble. That's natural on the fans part. Fans always look for scapegoats when things go tits up, he should have dealt with it better.

The key points with Owen for are: 1. He does not set the transfer or wages. We decide them. We decided to pay way over the odds so our chairman could feel like a hero. 2. Injuries - Exactly what did people expect. He'd had problems completing a significant number of games since he broke through at Liverpool. At his last club before joining us, Real, the physio said it was difficult to patch him to get him on the pitch 3. England - Howay man. It's the pinnacle. If you've played any level of football, that is the dream. 4. Lack of effort - You can't become a different player overnight just because the team is struggling, you are what you are. Again we knew this. 5. Environment - Is anyone going to seriously suggest that the club at the time created a great footballing envrionment? We chopped and changed bad managers, signed poor players on silly wages, and generally became a laughing stock. 6. Loyalty - Maybe a little. Did anyone want him to stay and really think he'd turn down going to Man U to stay.

I know my take will upset some but there you go. Throw your tomatoes!

I agree with what you're saying.

Bottom line is though we stuck by Owen through all of that **** and he couldn't even be dignified towards the club. From day one he set his stool out when he talked about us not being his 'first' choice. Personally, i don't give a **** what he said about the club in private but you don't turn around on your first day at your new emplyers and say 'Yeah it's nice to be here even if it wasn't where i wanted to work'.

When he left he acted like a complete prick. He could've been gracious, maybe paid credit to the fans who cheered his name or wanted him to stay and thanked us for our support, given it the old 'it's not you, it's me' spiel. He could've stepped up and explained everything behind it. But he didn't, he acted like the slimy money grabber we know him as today and ****ed off the same way his time with us had been; head down, wallet open.

The guy had absolutely no class about him and deserves to be treated with complete and utter comtempt from everyone who loves this club.

As I say everyone to their own Lord Beer. But I love the club, but don't feel the need to treat him with contempt. It's a bit arrogant to suggets that if you love the club you treat him with contempt. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. He left quietly under a cloud for me. He had to goand we all wanted him to go because we couldn't afford him. The murmurs had been out for a while with the majority of crowd. He did pay tribute to the Newcastle fans on quite a few occasions. It just got lost under all the bitter vitriol. He has acted childishly twice since responding to the abuse he receives from our fans. Fans will do that and he should no better than to comment.

As for the day 1 comment. It was a loaded question from the journalist. We all knew we weren't first choice and that journalist just wanted to get a bit of animosity going. It worked. On hand you want the truth, but when he gave it then you didn't like it. Are you not more concerned that we all knew he didn't want to be here, the whole fecking world did, but our chairman charged on like the belingerent fool he was? As I say he should be using Twitter like he has, but at the same time there's a lot more to this than meets the eye if you sit back and look at the hard facts. I certainly put a whole lot more faith in what he has to say, than Derek and Fat Fred!

Anyway, talking about Owen I just happened to put my hand on this old programme. He looked happy enough to be here then.
