You can tell he reads the fail!

I have a friend from yorkshire and I call her a thieving northern monkey and she calls me a soft southern shandy drinking **** (even though I drink northern beer).

What the PC police fail to understand is things can be said in jest (Matt Lucas admits to singing the Brighton gay songs). Im sure we all have insults for our best mates that wed never dream of calling a stranger.

Calling Shaun Maloney a useless midget isnt offensive. Going up to a midget and abusing him for being short is offensive.

No chance, I wont even visit a link. It would be like you visiting a loony left PC site.

They both do my head in equally.

Hah! The fact is that I try to read different perspectives regardless of whether they're left or right, libertarian or authoritarian. I am a thoroughly imperfect being - as you will have long since realised - but try to look at things on the basis of good decisions and bad decisions, rather than what conforms to whatever ideology. It just so happens that the majority of what I consider to be good decisions seem to right-of-centre. My infrequent visits to the Political Compass, however, constantly put me as a slightly left-of-centre minor authoritarian... which is probably appropriate given the time and given the circumstances. I suspect we have more in common than either would be prepared to admit.

I have I laugh at both sides, especially in the right in the US which is totally nuts. Its almost beyond believable as the US left would be considered right wing here.

I thought getting that way was what a "bender" was all about?

My dad in 1930's London used to talk about the nancy (fancy) boys?

....and of course watch out for Ben Down & Phil McCavity (schoolboy humour I recall).

Also the poor old "gollywogs" of my youth - I remember collecting all those Robertson's jam labels (by appointment to her majesty) to get the free gollywog pins.

Sometimes life these days seems far too politically correct.

I've worked with an Aussie who called me a "Limey bastard" - no offense taken.

Life today IS too politically incorrect. It is as though some wish us to become automatons like ants, incapable of independent thought and devoid of individuality. They will not rest until all thought is policed irrespective of whether it is kept to oneself or shared. You just have to look at our police "service" (not "force") today, which is too preoccupied allocating expensive, scarce resource in the pursuit of perceived "hate crimes" to actually patrol our streets and deter real crimes. It's a disgrace.

Interestingly, amongst the few television programmes the late Mary Whitehouse considered to be marvellous family entertainment were the Black & White Menstrual Flow and Jim'll **** You.

I think something happened in Ireland IIRC that the boys werent allowed to wear shorts when it was really hot so they all decided theyd wear skirts and there was nothing the school could do.

Maybe this school thinks something similar will happen. The only shock is that it isnt a woman doing it.

Shirts and ties, another double standard that pisses me off, blokes have to suffer them in offices while women get to wear what they want.

It's not just what we shout at the players though. The normal swear words are one thing but when people drift into other territory then it's not just the fact that it's abuse directed at a player but, potentially, abusive and upsetting for someone sitting near or around you. Some things that are accepted as casual insults are more harmful than you might expect.

Well said. Like anything taken too far 'political correctness' can be both harmful and ridiculous. But in my lifetime attitudes have changed significantly for the better, and abuse based on stereotypes and difference , though still scarily present, is much less prevalent now than a couple of decades ago. It would not even cross my kids' minds to abuse someone based on race, sex, sexual orientation etc etc. (at least I hope so) - hopefully because of he way they have been brought up, but also because of the long term effect of 'political correctness'.

I can understand Uber's irritation only too well, and I sit on the libertarian left wing of the Political Compass (which surprised me too) and abhor restrictions on freedom of speech, no matter how offensive what is being said is. We need the freedom to attack stupidity and ignorance with everything at our disposal.
