It doesn't say by how much he's increased his stake in the club, and the only quote in the article is from Steve Wraith.

I saw this and I think it could happen. The problem will be finding a buyer for us.

Agree but stumbling block could also be price. MA wont give it away.

We'd have to pray for a step up in owner quality if we were to be sold. Ending up with a Venky's type is unthinkable.

I wouldn't trade Ashley for the unknown. He has his faults but there are many worse.

There are indeed. I also really would not put it past Ashley to sell to the worst of them if they were offering him the same £ as an option who would really push us on.

Would be nice to get a Mega Rich Arab who'd give us enough cash to buy the players we need to compete with the top teams.

Yep. Probably not very clear but that is what I was driving at. The price on the club is quite steep as it owes Mike a fair wedge. Why would he just give it away when he can just slowly chip away. I'm not one for "anybody but Mike" I have to say. There are many far worse owners as Freddd points out. It just there are many far better ones too! I don't think its greedy to want the best for the club, i.e. take Mike's good points, and add some decent PR and a bit of football knowledge, and some less crazy/provocative appointments.

    That would be lovely.

But if you told me that Ashley had sold to some rich fellow about whom nobody seemed to know much, my reaction would be more one of fear than of hope

Certainly. That is the nature of the PL. I said on another thread, 100% of owners in the PL are seriously rich bastardos who made their money by stepping on others. There is no way of knowing what their intentions are.

Do you think this could have something to do with him trying to pull the rug from under Pardew?

Perhaps having a manager in place on an 8-year deal isn't particularly attractive to buyers who will inevitably want their own man in charge.
It was fine when he had no intention of flogging the club, but maybe seems like the dumb idea it always was now.

Bring in Joe, upset everyone including the manager and remove problem.

Could it also have something to do with the reticence to do any transfer deals.

I know we're tight but if a sale was on the cards it could put transfer plans on the backburner...

    Fingers crossed! :D

The chances that a sale of the club is so imminent that it will complete and allow the new owners to do their own shopping in the transfer window is slim to the point of approaching zero. Nobody but Ashley buys clubs without doing due diligence and that would take weeks in itself. If a deal were agreed today it wouldn't complete this window

No I agree, that wouldn't happen. But the current regime certainly wouldn't bother spending would they if a sale was in the pipeline?

Best twitter rumour of the day is that MA has agreed a deal to sell NUFC to the Qatar royal family. For £500 million.

    If only it were true!

Oh, I think it would. A club that is doing well sells for a much higher price than one that is doing badly. Also, any player that is on the club's books is an asset.

If a deal were really imminent, I could see Ashley consulting with the purchaser about who the purchaser wanted us to buy but you wouldn't let the club sleep walk into shambles because you hope somebody will buy the shambles from you some day

A buyer could definitely instigate transfer deals they wanted before sale is completed yeah, they'd come in as an investor. They'd have to be a bit misguided and gamble happy to do it but it's not beyond the realms.

I don't believe anyone potentially buying the club OR indeed Ashley believes this squad needs ANY additions to survive in the PL though and that's all a prospective buyer would care about.
They'd be confident we'll pick up enough points before January at least.

It's NOT happening so it's all conjecture, but I think if a sale was looking possible Ashley would want the books to look as attractive as poss and not release a transfer budget.

No, we're not signing anyone because we're tighter than a nun's... And we have JFK, who can pick up the phone to Alex Ferguson but he only plays golf these days.
