Good post, Bushman. Made me feel quite nostalgic even if those days were before my time. Sad bit at the end.
I saw him a number of times but didn't know he died so young. The crowd was a bit sparse on the SA Rd. terrace in that pic.
Thanks Bushman I rarely use Report TBH but the only reason I do is to go through the Archives and history photos and mags. That section is second to none for history and memorabilia of our team/ club many years before my birth I would urge any who haven't scanned through it, to do so. some great pics and stuff there.
Surely he must of been one of the only and first black players at the time ?? I only mention it 'cos I met Clyde Best once, who I thought was one of the first to play here. Seems there were a few before him.
I remember Tesi very well, as he was the first black footballer to play for us. His nickname was, in fact, "Omo". Omo was a well-known washing powder in the 1950's and their advertising slogan was "Omo washes whiter". As you can see form the photo, Tesi was very black! Today that nickname would be deemed to be "not politically correct"! Rangers suporters have always had a keen sense of humour!
Tommy Best was the first black footballer to play for us in 1950. Tesi was known as "Thunder" as well as "Balinga" (same meaning) When coaching kids at school they called him "Baba Ball".
