The Church investing money in exploitative enterprises.

Typical. It has no business investing money that was donated to it. Yet more proof that Churches are businesses.

If he wants to pretend to know anything about how real people live he could start by not living in a palace.

Banking money donated especially (deposit) account is an investment. Nothing wrong for churches to invest money as long as it is not against their faith.
Investing money to run a brothel is not a wise investment.<ok>

they can hardly keep it in a mattress can they:) Normally that would not be a risky investment though in Cyprus it has turned out to be for many<ok>

They should not be taking chances with money donated which is pretty much gambling with the money. it would be no different than if they went to Vegas with the cash in principle.

5.5 billion in investments according to BBC. They should be spending their money on promoting their message and on good causes not investing, maybe their congregations would increase. This just goes to show how morally corrupt the church is, they should be using all this money not trying to make a profit.

Aye, the Church is self serving and the upper echelons live like royalty. A ****ing joke.

What a disgusting joke the church is. Trying to get some publicity about the extortionate interest rates of loans when they are the ones investing in it and are sitting on more assets than needed to feed every hungry person in the entire country.

Not a surprise, the hallowed Mother Theresa had access to a vast fortune yet those she supposedly cared for lived in squalor without medical care of any kind, her image hauled in billions for the church from a guilty public around the world.

It's no coincidence this has been kept nice and quiet for so long. once the cat is out of the bag already only then will the likes of the BBC raise the issue

I am NOT religious, and whilst I wholeheartedly agree with most of what you say it should still be stated that the CofE, RC and Islamic churches work in the poorest, most deprived parts of the country when social workers, teachers and other state agencies have long gone home for the day. the job of an inner city vicar or priest is 24/7 and mostly thankless. I despise organise religion, but I despise more the demeaning of the thousands of well-meaning, sometimes ineffective, but overall honest people who work with poor and deprived. Wish I had the guts and passion to do it, Godless or not.

There are also lots of people working hard who aren't religious. If you are going to do good you don't need to dress it up with nonsense. I think the ones you're talking about would be still be doing their efforts even if the churches bank balances were more sane.

Possibly. maybe even probably. I dunno. As Elvis Costello said, "What's so funny about peace, love and understanding?".

Edit: just switched to the invention of lying whilst typing this. The bit where Gervais talks about the 'big man in the sky'.... very Life of Brian multitude scene. Probably best I stop waffling and go to bed.

I made that point on the other Church thread a few days ago, you're late to the party :). It's always the lowest ranks at ground level doing all the great work as well as affiliated volunteers. The higher up you go the less they do and the more rotten they are.

The unseen doing that work are just that, almost invisible. Meanwhile the Pope sits atop an empire. Archbishops are no better and also live like royalty.
