This is my favourite video showing the quality of women's football. According to one of the top comments on youtube she'd only conceded 2 goals in 5 games before this one and they finished 4th (she didn't play in the 3rd place play-off, which they lost 8-2 to Germany)

It even makes our defence look good!

Yes it is terrible, but they are kids and have you seen some of the own goals Frank Sinclair produced?! To be honest it was women goalkeepers that put me off for a long time but a lot of them have improved a lot in recent times. I guess you have to accept that on average they are shorter and also many are part-timers.

I do love it when people use videos of 16 year old kids as an accurate representation of the quality of women's football as a whole.

I bet no boys playing at that age (and are not professionals) make mistakes...

Yep womens football is amazing. The high standard blows us all away.

Come on. These are videos of international goalkeepers being HIDEOuS at the game. can you honestly pick out a piece of womens football that takes the breath away? Thats why we watch sport after all, to be in awe of what some of the elite members of society are capable of, otherwise we'd just play instead of watching. I honestly believe my mates and i would give our england ladies a bloody good rub - sorry, run, autocorrect is hilarious- for their money

If only someone had filmed our keeper's stunning double-save against Watford last season.....

Also, the play between Japan and Sweden in the Olympics last year was pretty breathtaking.

Yeah, you keep telling yourself that.....

Sadly rather predictable, pity Denmark did not win tonight as they were the much more positive side but maybe Norway can give Germany more of a run for their money.

Post a video or link and i'll admit if im wrong, but ive seen a fair bit of womens football albeit only on tv and every time im left wondering why i bothered. And i stand by the comment about england, certaunly would have had a chance if they played like they did against france, and im not exaggerating one bit.

I never claimed womens football was amazing. I think that there is quite a spectrum even at the national level due to levels of participation and financial investment. I have seen some good games in this tournament and I enjoyed some open football, passing, skill and technique is not something that the better sides lack. I am quite critical of England because I believe Hope Powell is the female equivalent of Stuart Pearce. I would say that the womens game is refreshing in the fact that most of them play it for the love of the game plus there is the lack of hype unlike what we have for apparently the greatest league in the world: The Premiership where I saw plenty of dour displays and defending.

I would much rather we encourage young women to take up football and do something that they enjoy while keeping fit instead of encouraging them to aspire to be the next Cheryl Cole.

You can look at it two ways, one as inferior to the mens game or secondly as an incomparable sport which has improved a great deal in recent years despite the much lower levels of funding.

Fun game. Really end to end stuff and some corking play, and the highlights don't do it justice!

    :) - Not very subtle

I'll probably draw the line at stalking her in Paris.

As for the continued debate on quality. Like I've said above many people seem to get hung up and dismissive of it by comparing it to the men's game. But that's always going to be physical miss match.

If you take Tennis as an example where the both games have happily shared the limelight and built their own histories then both can be appreciated.

I'm sure the women would feel patronized but I do think the game would benefit from a smaller pitch, much like boys football would in this country,

I thought that the pitches seemed too big for them, but no one is going to provide different sized pitches for women, especially at the local park level. They start young on these pitches as they are the only ones available.

    100% right.

Chicks just can't play football, I played local men's football for over 30 years and every single team I played in would have been able to beat any chick team. They are rubbish, unfit and just not designed for football.

Hmm. Intelligent Post and i cant help agreeing that promoting womens sport instead of celebrity culture is a good thing. But the problem i have with it is that its not trying to attract female viewers and encourage girls to get active. The bbc put it all over there sport website and on tv where comparisons with the male game are inevitable. But the people that watch it are people that already like the game, theyve not done their job and put in in a domain where it can differentiate itself from the mens game and inspire girls to get active. Thats why i dont have time for it, because in theory exposure for womens football should be a good thing. But at the moment it stands to be ridiculed instead of attracting new fans.

I would love to see a game , some local pub side against England chicks. My money would be on the blokes, every day of the week. Tactically , they'd just have to go route one early on, getting the ball into the mixer and putting pressure on the useless keeper. Add a bit of banter to put them off "your bum looks big in those shorts", or maybe " I can see your roots" ,call them "love" or "darling", it'll soon put them off. Shame political correctness means such a game will never take place, as it'll prove once and for all footballs a mans game.

Actually Fran, there are more and more smaller pitches becoming available, so there is opportunity to play on a smaller pitch.
