Yeah sounds great. Might as well lock all threads about new signings as soon as they're created because there's nothing to add except "yep, we've signed them." After all, there's absolutely no way to gather a sense of a player's ability from watching them at levels other than the British Premier League.
That's a silly reaction Dan. In as much as any of our comments are valid at any time, about players, our comments will be more considered if we give ourselves time to gather information. That can only come from games played by the player and watched by us.
Yes but that doesn't mean that people cannot form their own opinion of a player. Some are rather stating the obvious when it is an untried player in the premier league. Will he be as good in this league as he was in that league etc. All in all it is about opinions The managers the board and of course the fans.............Lets face it if you are paying good money for a player, you expect the best from them and would normally say so.
Sure it doesn't. But by the same token, make ill considered comments today and they may come back to bite you. You could call it a percentage thing.
But you said any comments are invalid until they've played in the Premier League, didn't you? Obviously they'll be more valid after they've actually played but you were taking issue with discussions before that, I'm not sure what your problem is. Nobody is crowning him player of the season, people are just saying they're excited (or not) about him joining us and are discussing the merits of his game. What exactly do you disagree with in that?
I understand that there are some who haven't seen much of Wanyama and therefore are withholding judgement, but there are also some who have a very good idea of how good he is. I don't believe that you need to see someone play in the EPL before you can know how good he'll be - if you pay enough attention, you can get a good idea of how good he is, whether he's been playing in England, Scotland or Nepal.
I'm not going to banter this back and forwards with you Dan. All I'm saying is that the high expectations we have of players are in our own minds, if we don't have the real evidence of quality play in our own league. We all know the SPL isn't the best league in the World, and personally I would hold my judgement on a player until after I've seen him play for Saints a few times in competitive matches, particularly as he has come from a weaker league. That is all. As for invalid comments; more accurately I said that our comments will be increasingly valid the more we see of him or other players, in as much as any of our comments are valid at any time. We are not experts. Look, this isn't a huge point with me so whatever stance you want to take is fine by me. I just happen to think my view a reasonably sensible one.
I see Wanyama as being our "Claude Makalele" type player. His job is to get the ball back, then give it to players who can do things with it.
Hahaha that is such a sly dig. Im not too excited about wanyama after gastons tough first season. It was nice to see that he was strong in the air and on the ground. And he has a strong shot. Clearly he offers something we dont have but whether he will fit into our side and adapt to the premier is still doubtful. Not that doubtful though
I think he's more like Essien. He's not just a physical player; he dribbles well and much like Morgan he gets into the box when he sees an opportunity.
No! If we sign someone who I believe to be a good player and great fit for us, I want to scream it from the roof tops and be excited. WAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Carlton Cole was bought in by Southampton when everybody was calling him a donkey, his job spec was simple. 1. win the ball 2. give it to Le Tiss.If Victor is our new Carlton Cole then all we have to do is find our new Le Tiss. I believe Victor has much more to his game though and he is a great buy.
That moment is ingrained in my memory, like the shooting of JFK or the birth of my children. I was making a piece of toast in our newly-refurbished kitchen and the news came on the radio. It was one of those things where you knew what was going to be said.. "The European player of the year, Kevin Keegan, has been bought by..." and somehow you knew the announcer was going to say "Southampton" before he actually said it. What a moment!
