FULHAM have pulled out of a £5million move for Aston Villa striker Darren Bent, leaving the way clear for Newcastle to make a bid.

Darren Bent’s £80,000-a-week wage demands have proved too high

The Cottagers were favourites to capture the England striker but Bent’s £80,000-a-week wage demands have proved too high.

Newcastle’s new director of football Joe Kinnear has made Bent his No1 target after the striker was made available by Villa, who have signed Christian Benteke to a new contract.

Kinnear is in talks with Bent, who still has a property in the North-east after his spell at Sunderland and is keen on a move back to the area.

Magpies manager Alan Pardew is hoping Yohan Cabaye will still be around to provide the supply line to Bent, having insisted the midfield playmaker is not for sale unless Newcastle receive an “astronomical” £20m-plus bid.

He is a player I want to keep. He is a great technical player and his personality is fantastic. There is no bid as we speak now

France international Cabaye has been linked with a move to Manchester United or a return to French football with Paris Saint-Germain after admitting to being unsettled last season at St James’ Park.

But Pardew said: “He is a player I want to keep. He is a great technical player and his personality is fantastic. There is no bid as we speak now.”

Pardew has privately indicated only a huge fee would persuade Newcastle owner Mike Ashley to sell, in the same way the club banked a British-record £35m from Liverpool for striker Andy Carroll.

Meanwhile Newcastle have been left sweating on a ban for skipper Fabricio Coloccini after he was sent off for fighting in a friendly against Portuguese side Pacos De Ferreira last night.

Would still prefer us to be realistically looking at Gomis and Remy tbh but we are always so slow to do business.

I can't understand how we can possibly make the wage thing work for us. He isn't worth 50k-60k per week and the club will know this?

If he is holding out for his current wages then Villa are stuck with a very expensive reserve team footballer.

There is no way we will pay him 80k a week.

    This.

I like Bent, but there are rumours that he's lost a yard of pace and he's never worth £80k a week.

What l don't understand is if his wage demands are preventing him securing a move away from a club that clearly doesn't want him. Why in heavens name would you hold out for money, if it means you sit on your backside on the bench, week after week, not playing the game you claim is your life and slipping further into obscurity.
Don't want us to sign him, but still don't get it.

When the cost of job satisfaction is £2million a year, you can at least be unsatisfied in comfort

If it were me, l would settle for less and join a team that wants me and be a hero, proving all the doubters wrong. When you consider Freddd the amounts of money these guys are securing for kicking a football, then even moderate wages are by comparison a small fortune to most of us mere mortals.

He is not the only one who thought the grass was green and then sank into obscurity.

You'd have to stop going to the games though.
