Quite a poser this one. For me it's a close call between Tosh and Martinez, tosh took us up the 4 divisions in 5 seasons no mean achievement but unfortunately after 2 seasons it was just as quick a return to the lower divisions, so I've plumped for Martinez who started our football revolution 6 years ago, a revolution that shows no sign of slowing down.
Got to go for Tosh, I would like to give Harry Griffiths an honourable mention though. Mabon, how come are you sober enough to put this thread up ? I thought you'd be celebrating the royal birth by waving a Union flag and declaring your undying loyalty
Toshack has to be runner up to Martinez! What Martinez left us was a greater football foundation, that will stand us in good stead for years to come...........
Martinez for me, he built a platform no other manager in our history managed. Even years after his departure the effect is still being felt in positive way and he is indirectly responsible for our team being in the Premier League, winning the Carling Cup, qualifying for Europe, attracting players like Bony and having players like Iniesta tweet about us to their fans. We wouldn't be in this position if it wasn't for him much in the same way as if the board wasn't here.
Its a crap poll on Sky. They accredit Sousa for the passing style and RM isnt even in the mix! Micky Adams for me...not
Roberto Martinez by a mile. Regardless of the circumstances surrounding his departure, if it wasn't for him, we wouldnt be where we are today.
Martinez, the original architect. Martinez sparked a revolution in thought and deed at our club. He lit the fires of style and ambition which has guided us from near extinction to premiership glory. He nurtured and nourished our growth with a style of play now widely respected and referred to as 'the Swansea Way'. Respect must go to all our managers for buying into Martinez footballing philosophy and continuing and developing us further by building our club on the solid foundations laid by Martinez. In my opinion, Martinez is the bedrock of our success.
Martinez because of the footballing legacy we inherited which has taken us to where we are now. But I will never forget that Tosh was the first manager to take us into the top flight when we were never out of the top six in that first season. We took on the top teams of the day and beat them all. I know we were relegated in the second season but, people who know, will tell you that we had a truly horrendous injury list for much of that season and we couldn't cope with our thin squad. Had we access to bigger financial resources, who knows we might even have stayed there until the present day. Certainly our best players were equal to anything in the division with the likes of Curtis, Robbie, Bob Latchford, Leighton James, Jeremy Charles, Ante and Jimmy with perpetual motion John Mahoney driving us on in midfield. Add class players such as Gary Stanley and others and we had one hell of a team. Trouble was we could never consistently field many of them and the rest is history........
Potentially Laudrup - he's been given the opportunity to build his own team. Interesting to see how the coming season evolves. Thus far, however, for me it has to be Tosh - he took us through all the Divisions. Roberto laid the current foundations but he didn't lead us to to the top flight. We needed Sousa's defensive nous and then Brendan's final piece of crafting via Sinclair and Borini.
Bumped into Tosh at Cardiff airport a few years ago when we were in the doldrums. We both had time to spare waiting for our flights and passed an enjoyable hour over a couple of drinks reminiscing about our time in the First Division. Interestingly, he touched on the lack of strength in depth of our squad which led to our relegation. Had to agree with him when he said that, had we been able to field his best team consistently, we would have been pushing the top six again. I know others have a different experience because Tosh can be a bit insular and aloof when the mood takes him but I found him to be a top bloke. Got to laugh at his comment, though, when we shook hands at the end, when I said how much I had enjoyed our fantastic run to the top. He grinned and replied that he was glad I enjoyed it because we would never see those times again. I can't tell you how glad I am that his prophecy was so wrong.
can't believe no-one has mentioned Alan Cork, some beautifful football played under his tenure (route 1 to Allsop all day long!!!!) in front of 1 to 2 thousand people at the Vetch!!..ahhh, the good old days!!
Alan cork did sign some decent players though,and got us a win up at the scum if I remember correctly! A Keith walker thunder bolt wasn't it ?
