That's true, but I fully believe we have signed a truly excellent keeper in Mignolet. And to be fair, the last couple of seasons Reina hasn't been at his best. At this current time I would personally rate Mignolet higher than Reina (clearly my own opinion, and I have no stats to back it up). But like I said Jones scares the **** out of me, and should NOT be our number 2, so that's a major worry for me.
I agree. He's done well at times but you just get the feeling that there's always going to be a mistake from him.
in the end everyone seems to want to assume reina was benched with minger playing. i don't see that one... i hope he works out, doesn't do a brad on us and stays fit too.... i wanted that transition year for him... would have been good.
Fairly obvious something was happening with Reina, two first choice keepers at the same club doesn't work. Benitez may have spoken to him plus maybe a move to Barce with Reina fancying a change of scene waiting to see which came off. Good luck to him.
I wish Reina all the best, I think he's always displayed a good attitude even if his form has dipped in the past two years. The loan deal, as many of you feel, confuses the hell out of me. I get the Benitez link but from our perspective it's a weak hand to play and shows we might still be a soft touch when it comes to with top players. After all Rodgers' bluster in the last couple of days about basically no longer being a selling club (unless we don't rate the player) this is fairly undermining. We are also losing a very senior player (sorry Pep, no insult intended) and the influence that has around the training complex and on the pitch. Not good. Keeping Reina and getting Mignolet seemed to be a statement of intent, both in the market and in terms of what we expect from the players performance wise, and was part of the reason I was happy with Ming's signing. Now we are back to square one, pretty much a one keeper side, only considerably weaker since Mignolet is yet to be tested at a club of our size and with our expectations. This is also ominous for the inevitable intensifying of the Suarez transfer saga and I now worry that we'll let him go 'cheaply'.
Actually thinking about the loan, maybe we didn't go with a full sale so that we've got the option to recall Pepe should Mignolet be a failure or get injured. It doesn't inspire confidence at all.
I personally think it's a decent move. One way or another Pepe had to leave soon with the arrival of Mignolet. We are not a top side that can afford to have 2 quality keepers and anyone thinking otherwise is deluded. After barely missing a game for 5 seasons Pepe all of a sudden started getting a few knocks here and there, not to mention his form generally dipping over the last 2 seasons. Now is the perfect time to start shifting him off (with the greatest respect of course) while he is still held in high regard as a good player. I also think it's a shrewd move to keep Pepe's value high (his value will be higher as a first choice for Napoli than on our bench) for when Valdes moves on next season and Barca finally make an offer.
i think you guys need to look at the improvement of form pepe display over many month last seaosn and how many super saves he produced to keep us in games. his concentration was back up, his reactions fantastic and his distribution top class. I still cannot see why ANYONE thinks mingolet was auto first choice here. If you take mr rodgers at face value then he wasn't gong t o mingoloet but if you don;'t why listen to anything he says?
There is no way on gods earth I'd have put Ming in ahead of Reina had they both been at Anfield come the start of the season
when i say a brad i mean a brad freidel. look not up to it when he does play and end up being great for someone else..... thats a "brad"
None of us know exactly what Pepe and/or his agent had said to the club prior to his joining Spain in Brazil. Neither do we know what 'deals'/understandings have been arranged with Rafa. In this case the base facts look strange and therefore don't probably truly reflect the full story.
Don't see why people are upset it's only a loan. Pepe is moving to a team in the Champions League, which could actually bump his price up if he does perform. If he performed for us this season and we failed to get Champions League would his price potentially go up? No.
I heard there is a two for one price deal on flights into Liverpool from Italy in July 14, so once again Rafa's tactics are spot on
Pepe's move to Napoli has been completed. Good luck to him,a player with dignity and love for our club. Sad he has gone but that's life in football. Hope he does well. Perhaps Suarez should take note!
